Overview
Locking XPL is the primary way to upgrade your tier on Plasma One. When you lock XPL, it is committed for 12 months in exchange for access to a higher tier. At the end of your lock period, you can choose to unlock your XPL, renew your lock, or lock more to stay on your current tier or upgrade further.
How to lock XPL
XPL locking is triggered through the tier upgrade flow, not from the Manage XPL page directly.
Go to the Tiers tab in the app
Tap the progress bar
Select your tier
Select the Lock XPL option
Review and confirm the lock
Your tier is upgraded immediately once the lock is confirmed. You can only have one active lock at a time.
If you upgrade mid-period, for example from Core to Platinum, your lock period restarts from the date of your Platinum upgrade and runs for a fresh 12 months.
Viewing your lock
You can see the details of your active lock in the Manage XPL section of the app, including:
The amount of XPL locked
The date your lock started
The date your lock period ends and you can unlock
How to unlock XPL
You can unlock your XPL from the Manage XPL section of the app once your 12-month lock period has ended. The unlock option will be available in the app soon.
What happens when you unlock
The effect on your tier depends on how much XPL you unlock:
Unlock all XPL: your tier drops to Lite immediately
Unlock down to Core: your tier drops to Core immediately
Keep 100,000 XPL locked: your Platinum tier remains active
Your tier changes take effect immediately on unlock.
Can I unlock early?
No. XPL cannot be unlocked before the end of your 12-month lock period. The unlock date is shown in the Manage XPL section of the app.
Closing your account with locked XPL
You cannot close your Plasma One card account while you have XPL locked. Locked XPL cannot be unlocked or transferred before the end of the 12-month lock period for any reason, including account closure; it is released at maturity to your designated withdrawal address. You can close your account once your lock has matured.
Before initiating an account closure, make sure your external wallet supports XPL and has the asset added, otherwise your XPL may not appear in your wallet after the transfer.
