Troubleshooting Chromecast Streaming Issues

Step-by-step fixes for common Chromecast connection problems.

Written by Jordan Blake

The Playbook app works with Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra, letting you control everything from your iOS or Android device. If something isn't working, work through the checks below.

Initial setup checks

  • Remove any special characters (emojis, apostrophes) from your Chromecast's name. Open Google Home, select the device, rename it, then restart Playbook.

  • Make sure your phone's OS is up to date. Playbook on Chromecast requires iOS 13.0+ or Android 5.0+.

  • Make sure the Playbook app is updated. Android requires version 2.4 or higher; iOS requires version 4.2 or higher.

  • Both your phone and Chromecast must be on the same Wi-Fi network.

  • Check that your router has multicast enabled (see your router's documentation).

Cast icon is missing

A missing Cast icon usually means your device's connection data needs refreshing. Try the steps below for your device.

Android

  1. Open Google Home and confirm your Chromecast appears in the Devices section. If it isn't listed, it's on a different network — see Google's support site for help.

  2. Restart your Android phone and try Playbook again.

  3. Open Google Play Store > Menu > My Apps and update Google Home and Google Play Services.

  4. Unplug your Chromecast for 15 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for it to reboot.

iPhone / iPad

  1. Open Google Home and confirm your Chromecast appears in the Devices section. If it isn't listed, follow Google's network-switching guide.

  2. Unplug your Chromecast for 15 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for it to reboot.

Note: If you've updated your Android fully and Chromecast still doesn't work, your device may not be compatible. Some Android devices (like the Amazon Fire tablet) cannot use Chromecast without Google Play Store access.
