Difficulty: Intermediate

Number of steps: 5

Time commitment: 10 Minutes

Step 1: Set up your drop!

If you need help setting up a drop, please see our article on drop creation here: How Do I Set Up a POAP Drop?

Note: Be sure to request "0" mint links during drop creation!!

Step 2: Go to the "Manage Secrets" page

In order to create a Secret for minting POAPs, start by clicking the hamburger icon on the top right of any https://app.poap.xyz/admin/events page and then select the "Manage Secrets" option.

Step 3: Find your drop

On this page, you can now search for your drop by its name or ID. "ID" refers to the numbers that preface the name on the drop details page, also found at the end of the web URL. In this case, we will search by our drop name, enter our edit code, and click "Submit Authentication" to begin the Secret setup. If you cannot remember your edit code, check the email you received after creating your drop.

Step 4: Creating your Secret

On the next page, you’ll enter the details of your Secret. The "Secret Name" field is where you enter the word or phrase collectors will need in order to collect their POAP. Make sure that this is impossible to guess and has nothing to do with your event title, otherwise, people may guess the word/phrase and collect the POAP before you intend!

"Start Date" and "End Date" are self-explanatory, but note that they’re in UTC time. We recommend using a tool such as https://www.worldtimebuddy.com to convert your time so you do not have issues.

To avoid having your POAP farmed by people who did not attend your event, keep the minting period as short as possible. Think minutes, not hours. Also, note that the Secret will be case-sensitive and cannot include spaces. When ready, click "Submit" and await the email confirmation that your request for mint links was approved.

To reiterate, to have your drop reviewed positively by the Curation body, you must:

  • Use a secret that is impossible to guess.

  • Keep the claim period as short as possible. Minutes, not hours.

  • Only use this distribution method for live events, digital or IRL.

Step 5: Wait for approval

In order to prevent POAP farming and abuse, all drops are reviewed by the POAP Curation Body prior to "going live" and distribution. This process typically takes around 24 hours and you will receive an email with the verdict when your petition has been reviewed.

If you do not receive an email within 24 hours, you may submit a petition for approval on our Discourse forum by following the instructions below. Please do not submit to the forum unless a minimum of 24 hours have passed since drop creation.

Visit our Discourse page (https://discourse.poap.xyz) and submit your petition. If you are visiting this page for the first time, you will need to create an account. During account creation, please make sure to check your spam folder for the verification link, as we have had many users report difficulties receiving the link from Discourse.

Instructions can be found within a pinned message titled "Curator Guidelines: How to use this forum," also be found here

Once your petition is created, it will be reviewed by the POAP Curation Body, which will decide if the drop qualifies based on a set of principles laid out in the POAP Issuer Guidelines.

In short, if your petition does not get approved it is likely for one of the following reasons:

  • Your event description did not provide enough information.

  • Your event does not align with the ethos of POAP.

  • Your artwork was considered subpar/low effort.

  • You requested too many mint links or did not select the appropriate distribution method for your particular use case.

Once your petition is approved, you'll receive an email confirmation that looks like this:

If you requested mint links for manual distribution, a links.txt file will be attached to this email, containing your individual, unique (single-use) mint links.

Once your Event Start Date is triggered, these links can be distributed to your collectors, allowing them to mint or reserve one of your POAPs.
