Adding a trial to your subscription plans

Learn how to add a free trial period to a paid community plan.

Podia allows you to add free trial periods to your subscription plans, both new and existing.

You can set the trial duration anywhere from 1 to 365 days, and during this time, members will be able to access and test your plan for free.


Adding a trial to your plans

Here's how to add a trial to your subscription plans:

  1. In the sidebar menu, click on Community and then select Plans.

  2. Click on “Edit” next to the plan you’d like to add a trial for.

  3. Free trials can only be set for paid plans, so make sure to set a price for your plan first under Plan details.

  4. After setting a price for your plan, click the checkbox next to the trial option and add the number of days you want to offer (1-365). You can also enable/disable trials for existing paid plans.

    You can change the free trial length at any time. Any existing members on a free trial for the plan will be unaffected, while new members will see the new free trial period length.

  5. Click "Save" to save your changes.

And that's it!

When new member starts the signup process, they’ll see an indication of plans that offer a free trial period.


Trial email notifications

We automatically send two emails toward the end of the trial to prompt customers to connect a payment detail to ensure they upgrade to a paid plan.

3 days before the trial ends

If the member already has a credit card on file, we will include their payments details in the email:

When the trial expires

This email is sent when the trial has expired, and there's no credit card on file.


FAQ

Can members trial more than once?

No. Trials are only available for first-time members signing up for the first time for your community.

Existing members who switch plans - even those who have not previously used a trial - will not be eligible to enroll in a trial again and will be immediately charged.

Will my members be required to enter a credit card before signing up?

They won’t be asked to enter a credit card when signing up.

Three days before their trial ends, they’ll receive an email to let them know that their trial is about to expire. We will encourage them to enter a credit card to avoid losing access.

If they don’t upgrade before their trial ends, they’ll receive an email to let them know their trial has expired and they've lost access. They can come back and pay to regain access at any time.

What about anyone with credit card details on file?

Members who already have a credit card on file will have their membership auto-renew after the free trial.

3 days prior to the end of their trial, they will receive an email reminder that they will be charged once the free trial ends.
