Captions are subtitles added to your videos to make them accessible to a wider audience.

They help viewers who are deaf, hard of hearing, or who speak another language follow along, making your content more inclusive for everyone.

In this article, we'll teach you how to add subtitles to your videos.

Adding subtitles to your videos

Here's how to add subtitles to videos you uploaded to Podia.

  1. Locate the video you want to add subtitles to. Your video can be uploaded to an online course, community, etc.

  2. Hover your mouse over the video player to bring up its editing options and click on the Pencil (Edit) icon.

  3. An Edit video popover will open. Under the Captions area, select the language of the subtitle you want to upload and click on Choose file to upload it from your device.

Subtitle files must be in .VTT format. You can use a .SRT to .VTT file converter tool if your files are in .SRT format.

  4. To add subtitles in different languages, repeat the process for each language you want to include.

You can add subtitles in as many languages as you’d like. Subtitles will appear in the language they were added.

Viewing Subtitles

To view subtitles on a video, customers should click the “CC” button in the lower-right corner of the video player while the video is playing.

From there, they can select the language they want to activate, and subtitles will appear at the bottom area of the video.

FAQ & Troubleshooting

My subtitle file is not uploading... HELP!

If you're having trouble uploading your subtitle files, here are a couple of things to check:

Each individual caption should have its own timing signature. If there are two captions set to the same exact timing, the entire file will fail to upload.

Do you support .SRT files?

No, .SRT files are not supported. Podia supports .VTT files.

If you have an .SRT file, you can easily convert it to .VTT by using an online converter tool.

Will subtitles show up automatically?

No, subtitles won't show up automatically when a video is played.

To view subtitles on a video, customers should click the “CC” button in the lower-right corner of the video player while the video is playing.

Can I add subtitles to a video uploaded through a Video page section?

No. If you upload a video to your site using a Video page section, you won’t be able to add subtitles to it.

However, you can upload videos to site pages through the text editor instead — and videos added this way support subtitles.
