Legality of pricing

To comply with local carpooling laws, drivers must ensure that a Poparide passenger's contribution does not exceed the vehicle's shareable (operating) costs, such as gas, insurance, and maintenance.

Our pricing model considers these costs, and aims to allow drivers to ask for a fair contribution on their trip based on the distance and current gas prices.

Maximum price per km

In order to maintain fair pricing, Poparide currently sets a maximum price of 18 cents per kilometre.

The maximum price is based on the average cost of gas in Canada and gives drivers room to ask for a higher contribution if their vehicle has a higher miles per gallon (MPG) rating.

Note: For most routes, the average price per kilometre is 12 to 15 cents.

Recommended prices

Recommended prices on each route are calculated based on the:

  • distance of the trip and the cost of driving

  • pricing data for other trips on Poparide

  • prices offered by our competition

To encourage bookings, it's recommended that drivers set their price at or below the recommended rate. Charging too much discourages passengers who might then look for cheaper alternatives.
