Using the Porter Payment Terminal

How to use Porter's POS hardware to checkout clients

Updated over a month ago

If you’ve purchased a Porter payment terminal, you can accept in-person card payments directly from your checkout screen. If you haven’t ordered a card reader yet, you can do so here:

🔧 Setting Up Your Payment Reader

  1. Turn the device on

  2. Connect it to Wi-Fi

    • The device may run a short update

  3. Once it’s ready, you’ll see a red screen with the Porter logo

    • That means your device is fully connected and ready to use

💳 Accepting Payments with the Terminal

  1. Log in to the Porter mobile app, or app.getporter.io

  2. From the checkout screen:

    • Select “Send to payment terminal” as the payment method

  3. Hit the red button to request payment and send the charge to the terminal device

  4. A loading screen will appear on your device while the terminal updates

  5. The payment terminal will display the charge and tip options to the client

What Clients Can Do:

  • Choose a tip (preset % options or a custom amount)

  • Tap, insert, or swipe their card or phone to pay

✅ What Happens Next

  • Once the payment succeeds:

    • The app will automatically update to confirm the successful payment

  • If there’s an error (e.g., card declined or network issue):

    • You’ll immediately see an error message on your screen

Using a Porter terminal gives your clients a smooth, in-person checkout experience — and integrates directly with your calendar, reporting, and payout systems. Let us know if you need help connecting your device!
