Before going live, it's worth running through a few test scenarios to make sure Order Editing is working as expected - from the customer experience right through to your Shopify Admin.
Setting Up a Safe Test Environment
To keep things contained during testing, set up an exclusion that restricts Order Editing to orders tagged test-order only. This way, your live customers won't see any editing options while you run through the checks below.
Before You Place a Test Order
A few things to keep in mind:
Orders must be over $1 to process correctly
Use real products at their actual prices - avoid placeholder or $0 items
Place the order through your actual checkout flow, not as a draft order. Draft orders behave differently and won't reflect the real customer experience
Pay using a real payment method so that payment capture and authorisation can be properly tested
What to Test
Work through the test scenarios below and ensure Order Editing works as expected:
Scenario 1 - Order Editing Appears After Checkout
Place a test order and complete payment.
On the Thank You page, confirm the Order Editing app block is visible.
Open the Order Status page via the confirmation email and ensure the app block appears too.
Verify the countdown timer displays the correct time remaining.
Scenario 2 - Adding a Product
From the Order Status page, use the add product feature to add a product and complete payment.
Once the order editing window closes:
Open the order in your Shopify Admin.
Confirm the added product appears in the order line items.
Verify the correct additional amount was captured.
Scenario 3 - Removing a Product
Place an order with at least two items, then remove one via the Order Status page.
Once the order editing window closes:
Open the order in your Shopify Admin.
Confirm the removed item no longer appears in the order.
Check the transaction section and verify a refund for the correct amount has been processed.
Scenario 4 - Changing Quantity
Place an order with a quantity of 1, then increase it via the Order Status page and complete payment for the additional quantity.
Once the order editing window closes:
Open the order in your Shopify Admin.
Confirm the quantity reflects the change you made.
Verify the corresponding payment was captured for the additional items.
Scenario 5 - Updating a Shipping Address
Place an order with one address, then update it to a different address via the Order Status page.
Once the order editing window closes:
Open the order in your Shopify Admin.
Confirm the new address appears, not the original one.
If you have Shipping cost recalculation enabled, verify that the shipping cost has updated accordingly.
If Something Doesn't Look Right
Order Editing isn't showing up
Check that the Shopify app blocks for Order Editing is published
Confirm the
test-ordertag restriction is activeEnsure that you have at least 1 active order editing app block
Edits aren't reflected in the final order
Check whether the edits were made before the editing window closed
Review the order Timeline in Shopify Admin for edit events
Check order notes for any error messages
Payment didn't go through for an added item
Confirm your payment gateway supports additional authorisations
Double-check that the charge amount is correct
Try a different payment method if needed
Refund wasn't processed for a removed item
Review your Order Editing refund settings and confirm if your payment gateway supports partial refunds
Check the Transactions tab for the refund status
Integrations aren't syncing
Verify that any relevant flows (e.g. Shopify Flow, On-Hold, Delayed Payment, etc) are active
Check your 3PL or WMS settings for download trigger configuration
Confirm that the editing period has fully closed before checking for updates
Upsell options aren't appearing
Check that your add product app block is configured and active
Confirm the product is available and in stock
Verify the order meets any criteria you've set (e.g. minimum order value, eligible products)
Going Live
Once all scenarios have passed successfully, remove the test-order exclusion you set up at the start of testing. Your store is now ready to go live! 🚀
