App & plans overview

Understand how Prefixbox works inside Shopify — from scripts and permissions to search quotas and theme compatibility.

Built for Shopify explained

Prefixbox proudly carries the Built for Shopify badge. That means we follow Shopify’s highest standards for safety, performance, and compatibility — now and in the future.

Prefixbox is Built for Shopify and we also love Shopify

Key compliance features:

  • App embed system (we never overwrite your theme code)

  • Asynchronous scripts (no blocking or delays)

  • Full Online Store 2.0 support

  • Strict permission handling

  • Responsive support and active product development

💡 Hint: Because Prefixbox follows Shopify’s strict “Built for Shopify” standards, we don’t connect to your store directly or run anything outside their system. Instead, we use Shopify App Bridge — a secure framework built by Shopify that acts like a communication bridge between your store and our app. This ensures everything runs safely, fast, and in a fully Shopify-compliant way.

We don’t rely on hacks or fragile workarounds — everything is built the Shopify-native way, so it stays compatible with updates and your customizations.

Prefixbox & Online Store 2.0 compatibility

Prefixbox is fully compatible with all Online Store 2.0 themes — including Shopify’s official templates and any modern custom themes that use the Shopify Theme Editor.

You can:

  • Enable modules without touching code

  • Use Shopify’s Theme Extensions (app embeds & app blocks)

  • Visually manage layouts inside the Theme Editor

⚠️ Important: Prefixbox works best with Shopify’s supported 2.0 themes. If your theme doesn’t support Theme Extensions (e.g. legacy themes, custom themes), some features like search or collection blocks may not be available.

Not sure if your theme supports all Prefixbox features? Our team can help check compatibility and validate support for Shopify’s 2.0 standards.

How the Prefixbox script loads

Prefixbox is built to be fast, safe, and non-intrusive. Our script is:

  • Asynchronous — they never block or delay page rendering

  • Scoped — only active when needed

  • Theme-safe — they don’t overwrite theme code

You stay in control:

  • Each module can be turned on/off individually

  • Prefixbox only runs on relevant pages

  • Nothing breaks your existing layout

Theme overview

The Theme overview section (under Configuration) shows which Shopify themes have Prefixbox enabled.

It’s especially useful when you:

  • Work with multiple themes (e.g. live vs. staging)

  • Want to test Prefixbox before publishing

  • Need to troubleshoot theme-specific layout issues

The “Theme overview” menu lets you manage Prefixbox across multiple Shopify themes.

💡Hint: Use this menu to check where the Prefixbox core embed is active. From here, you can open the Manage app embeds screen for each theme to enable the core and manage module settings.

What the status labels mean

  • Active (green): Prefixbox core is live on this theme. All modules can function as expected.

  • Inactive (yellow): The core embed hasn’t been enabled yet (or was turned off). Even if modules are toggled on, they won’t work until the core is active.

  • Trial theme (red): This theme was installed as a trial from the Shopify Theme Store. You can edit its layout, but publishing and code access are restricted until purchased.

Manage app embeds

Click Manage app embed next to any theme in the Theme overview to open the full embed settings for that theme. This takes you to the Manage app embeds page, where you can enable the core embed, activate modules, and access their customization settings.

Full embed and module settings for the selected theme.

Once here, you don’t need to go back to the previous screen to switch themes — just use the Select theme dropdown in the top right corner to jump between your published and draft themes directly.

Permissions explained

Prefixbox only asks for the permissions needed to power your store’s AI Search & Discovery experience. Nothing runs unless you approve it.

Default permissions

Prefixbox requests only the access needed to power your AI-powered search & discovery experience. You must approve each permission request — nothing runs automatically.

  • Products – to sync your product catalog and show relevant items in search results (requires “Products” store permission)

  • Online Store (Themes) – to activate the Prefixbox core embed and visually integrate it into your theme (requires “Online Store” permission)

  • Store information – to adjust settings like language, currency, and respect plan‑based usage limits

We don’t modify your theme code directly – all behavior is injected via Shopify’s official app embed system.

Optional permissions

Some permissions are requested separately, based on the features you choose to use:

  • Orders – required for sales-based search ranking (provides access to order history but we won't access customer data)

  • Markets & Publications – required for multi-store and managing multiple catalogs

💡 Hint: You can accept or skip these extra permissions depending on your setup. The app will still work without them — they only unlock additional features.

Trust & data privacy

Your store data stays yours — Prefixbox just helps you use it better.

We only access the minimum information needed to deliver search results and features. There’s no hidden tracking, data resale, or shady exports.

Here’s how we keep your store safe:

  • Secure syncing – All access happens through Shopify’s OAuth system

  • Cloud-hosted – Data is stored in secure, enterprise-grade environments

  • No customer PII – Prefixbox doesn’t collect or store personally identifiable information

  • Full control – You can review and manage permissions anytime in your Shopify admin

💡 Hint: If you ever uninstall Prefixbox, all synced data is automatically removed from our servers within a short retention window.

Plan limits and quotas

All Prefixbox plans include the full AI-powered search experience — what changes is how much usage is included. Your quota defines how many searches you can serve, how many products can sync, and how many search tools you can use.

Plan limits define how much traffic, data, and tooling your store can use with Prefixbox. These include:

  • Monthly search quota – how many searches can be served

  • Product catalog size – how many products can be indexed

  • Tool usage – how many product promotions, redirects, and synonym rules you can create

If you reach a limit, here’s what happens:

  • Search tool limits – You’ll need to upgrade or remove existing rules to add new ones.

  • Product catalog size – Products over the limit won’t sync, so they won’t show up in search results

  • Search quota – We won’t cut off service without notice. If your store experiences a traffic spike, we’ll reach out to help you scale smoothly.

⚠️ Important: If your product catalog goes over the limit, unsynced products won’t appear in search until the overage is resolved. We’ll notify you if this happens. Keep in mind: we don’t control which products get excluded — Shopify handles this automatically during syncing, and the exact order isn’t visible or configurable.
