Promotions let you manually override the search results for specific queries by placing selected products at the top.
You can find Promotions under Merchandising > Promotions.
Promotions are useful for surfacing:
Products from a specific brand
Low-stock items (for clearance)
Seasonal or campaign products

Adding promotions
To create a promotion, click Add promotion—this opens the configuration screen where you can define triggers, timing, and products.
Once promotions are created, they’ll appear in a list with all key details
Name your promotion
Promotion names are only visible inside your Shopify admin.
Use clear naming conventions—especially if you’re planning to create multiple rules.
Promotion names are only visible to you in the Shopify admin
Define the trigger terms
Each promotion is triggered by search terms—the words shoppers type in the search bar. You can set multiple triggers for one promotion.
Example: To promote ACME phones, you could use terms like:
phone
smartphone
mobile
This way, whenever a shopper searches for any of these terms, the products you selected for the promotion will appear at the top of the search results—making them more visible and easier to discover.
You can add multiple search terms to trigger a single promotion
Set the promotion time window
Promotions can run:
Indefinitely
During a set time range (start and end date)
Set promotions to run indefinitely or match a specific campaign timeframe
💡 Hint: You can schedule promotions in advance by setting a future start date and time.
Select products to promote
Choose up to 10 products to show at the top of the results when the trigger is activated.
Use the Shopify product picker to search or browse your catalog.
Search or browse your catalog to select products for the promotion
⚠️ Important: If you have more than 10 products selected, the promotion can’t be saved.
Once you’ve selected your products, they’ll appear in a list below. You can reorder them using the drag handle or remove any item if needed. Products will always show up in this exact order when the promotion is triggered—on both the search page and the autocomplete.

Managing promotions
Click any existing rule from the Promotions overview to edit it.
The editor is the same as the one used for creating new promotions—everything can be updated later, including names, triggers, timing, and products.
Promotion statuses
Each rule shows its current status:
Live — Actively running
Scheduled — Start time is in the future
Completed — End date has passed
Multilingual rules
If your store has multiple languages, you’ll see a language dropdown in the top right.
If your store supports multiple languages, you’ll see a language dropdown in the top right of the screen.
Promotions are language-specific—you’ll need to set up separate rules and search terms for each language.
Using the language dropdown, you’ll only see promotions created for that specific language
💡 Hint: Plan limits apply to the total number of promotion rules across all languages (e.g. 5 rules = 5 total, not 5 per language).
