Redirects

Send shoppers to specific pages when they search for certain terms—great for linking to info pages or curated collections.

Updated this week

Redirects let you manually forward search queries to a custom URL. Instead of showing search results, shoppers are taken straight to the destination page.

You can find Redirects under Merchandising > Redirects.

The Redirects page before any rules are added

Adding redirects

To create a new redirect, click Add redirect. This opens a setup page where you can define the trigger terms and the target URL.

Name the redirect rule

Redirect names are only visible in your Shopify admin—they’re never shown to shoppers. Choose names that help you identify the purpose of the rule later (especially useful if you manage multiple redirects).

Define search term triggers

Add one or more search terms that should activate the redirect. When a shopper searches for any of these terms, they’ll be sent directly to the destination page.

Example:

You want to redirect people who search for store hours. Add triggers like:

  • opening hours

  • store hours

You can add multiple search terms to trigger a single redirect

Set the redirect destination

Paste the full URL where shoppers should land when the rule is triggered.

You can use Redirects for:

  • Informational pages — like opening hours or return policy

  • Category or brand pages — e.g., searching for an author name takes shoppers to that author’s collection

  • Any internal page that has a unique URL in your store

The destination URL shoppers will be sent to when they search using the trigger terms

💡 Hint: Use URLs that won’t change over time—or make sure they have proper redirects set up. This ensures your shoppers always land in the right place.

How redirects appear to shoppers

Unlike Promotions, which show promoted products in both autocomplete and search results, Redirects only appear in the autocomplete dropdown—but they also trigger after search execution.

When a shopper starts typing a trigger term (like “store hours”), a redirect suggestion appears in the dropdown.

If they click the suggestion or press enter to run the search, they’ll be taken straight to the destination URL—bypassing the search results page entirely.

Managing redirect rules

All your rules are listed in the main Redirects table. You can:

  • View active rules at a glance

  • Edit or delete any redirect by clicking into it

  • See which terms trigger each rule and where they lead

Multilingual support

If your store supports multiple languages, you’ll see a language dropdown in the top right. Each redirect rule is language-specific.

This means you can tailor different search terms or URLs for each language you offer.

Using the language dropdown, you’ll only see redirects created for that specific language

💡 Hint: Plan limits apply to the total number of redirect rules across all languages. (e.g. 5 rules = 5 total, not per language)
