Artifacts

Learn what artifacts are, how to generate them, and how to export and reuse them consistently.

When you ask the AI Assistant to generate a report, summary, or data overview, it can present the result as an artifact.

An artifact is a structured, formatted output that opens in a panel alongside your chat.

Instead of plain text, you get a structured layout: metric cards, project lists, status indicators, and grouped data in a format that's easy to share or export.

You can try it with prompts like:

  • Give me a portfolio overview for all active projects as an artifact.

  • Summarize open tasks and budget status for the Acme account. Show it as a formatted overview.

  • Create a status report for all projects due this month and present it as an artifact.

  • Which projects are over budget or behind schedule? Show it as a structured overview.

How Artifacts Are Generated

The AI Assistant generates an artifact when a structured layout would serve the response better than plain text — for example, when presenting a dashboard, a multi-section breakdown, a timeline, or a side-by-side comparison.

You can also request one directly — for example, "Present this as an artifact" or "Show this as a formatted overview."

Click the artifact to open it in full view and access export options. The artifact opens in a panel next to the chat, with a title bar showing the output name.

You can continue the conversation to refine it — ask the Assistant to update the layout, add a section, or focus on a specific project — and the assistant will generate a new, updated artifact.

📌 If you have Connectors set up, the AI Assistant can pull in live data from external tools when generating an artifact. For example, Slack updates from a project channel or open Notion pages linked to an account.

📌 Artifacts can include interactive filter buttons to narrow down the data shown — for example, filtering projects by type, status, or manager. Items like projects, budgets, or reports can also appear as clickable links that open the relevant record directly in Productive.

Artifacts Library (Beta)

Every artifact you generate is saved automatically and collected in one place. To access generated artifacts, open the Artifacts page from the grid icon in the AI Assistant header.

To generate a new one, click + Artifact in the top corner. This opens a new AI Assistant chat where you can describe what you want.

📌 Editing an existing artifact with the AI Assistant creates a new artifact. Your original artifact remains unchanged.

Each artifact appears as a card showing its name, a short description, when it was last edited, and whether you created it or it was shared with you. Use the controls at the top to find the one you need:

  • Use the All / Personal / Shared toggle to switch what the page shows:

    • All — everything you can access (your own artifacts plus anything shared with you).

    • Personal — only the artifacts you created.

    • Shared with me — artifacts other people have shared with you.

  • Search for an artifact by name, and sort the list by Last edited or Created.

Click a card to open the artifact, the same view you get when you open it from the chat.

📌 Artifacts are saved automatically and collected on the Artifacts page. Exporting is only for taking an artifact outside Productive. You don't need to export one to keep it.

Working With an Artifact

You can act on an artifact from two places:

  • A card's menu on the Artifacts page, or

  • The title bar when you open the artifact.

The available actions are:

  • Download as PDF — save the artifact as a PDF.

  • Download as HTML — the full rendered file, which you can open in any browser or embed elsewhere.

  • Rename — give the artifact a clearer name, so it's easy to find later. (available when the artifact is open)

  • Delete — remove the artifact permanently.

You can also share an artifact from the same menu.

Sharing an Artifact

You can share an artifact with other people or teams in your organization.

Select Share from a card's menu on the Artifacts page, or the Share icon in the title bar when the artifact is open, then search for the people or teams you want to add:

  • Everyone you share with gets view-only access. They can open and read the artifact, but can't rename, delete, or reshare it.

  • Shared artifacts show up on the recipient's Artifacts page under the Shared filter, alongside their own.

📌 Sharing works between Productive users. To send an artifact to someone outside Productive, export it as a PDF or HTML file.

📌 You can only share artifacts you created. Artifacts created by someone else and shared with you can only be shared by their original creator.

Consistent Artifacts With Skills

The structure of artifacts can vary each time, depending on how you phrase the request. If you need the same format repeatedly, use skills — reusable instruction sets that define how the AI behaves in Productive.

For example, you can write a Skill that says:

  • Always use a specific color scheme when generating artifacts.

  • Always show the project manager's name next to each project.

  • Always include a fixed set of metrics like budget used, open tasks, and project health.

Once the Skill is set up, you don't need to re-describe these preferences each time — the AI applies them automatically.

You can find and manage all your skills by clicking your avatar in the upper right, then going to Customize > Skills.
