Assuming you qualify for a homestead exemption, here are the recommended steps to take when filing a homestead exemption. Following these steps will help maximize your chances of getting the exemption granted the first time.

  1. Download your Homestead Exemption Application from the appraisal district's website and fill it out (or download the exemption document from the Texas State Comptroller).
  2. Provide a copy of your driver's license that shows the address on your license matches the address of the property in your Homestead Exemption Application.
  3. Provide a water or utility bill for the property from January of the year you are applying the homestead be granted for. Make sure the bill is in your name. This will show that you occupied the residence on January 1st  (one of the requirements to obtaining the exemption). 
  4. File the exemption sometime between January 1st - April 30th (the earlier the better). If you recently purchased the property, I would file the exemption as soon as you can, just to get it out of the way. You can file the exemption by mailing it in or dropping it off at the customer service center at the appraisal district.
