Spotify Discovery Mode: Intent Rate

What does it mean & how does it work?

On Proton, music labels and artists can access and enable Discovery Mode on specific, eligible tracks. Results from the Discovery Mode campaign are available a month later and include something called the "Intent Rate".

Here's how Spotify defines the "Intent Rate" in their own words:

"INTENT RATE: The percentage of converted listeners who saved tracks from your release or added them to a playlist. These actions show intent to listen to you again in the future. Our research shows saves and playlist adds correlate with a 2.5x increase in streaming of an artist 6 months later."

In Discovery Mode, the "Intent Rate" is the percentage of listeners who either...

  • (A) Added the track to a personal playlist.

  • (B) Hearted the track / added it to their "Liked Tracks" playlist.

This means if 100 listeners heard the track in Discovery Mode, your intent rate would be 25% if 25 of those listeners added the track to a personal playlist or hearted the track, effectively adding it to their personal collection for later listening.

Intent Rate, Auto Renewal, and the
3 Track Limit for Discovery Mode

On Proton, artists & label managers can enable Discovery Mode on up to 3 tracks per month.

At the end of the month, these tracks will be automatically removed from Discovery Mode.

However, if the Intent Rate for the track reaches 1% or higher in the previous month, that song will be automatically renewed for Discovery Mode next month and will NOT count towards the 3 track limit.

This means over time, you can build a repertoire of more than 3 tracks running in Discovery Mode with a high Intent Rate.
