If you're reading this, then you may have received a letter from Proton about someone filing a copyright violation against your music on Spotify.

On Spotify, anyone/everyone to file a copyright violation notice against music appearing on Spotify. When this happens, Spotify hides the music from their platform until both parties can resolve the matter.

What can I do to resolve the problem?

If your label is powered by Proton distro, then Proton will share the email address with you of the person who filed the copyright claim against your music. If you want the music to be restored on Spotify, it requires getting in touch with that person and working on a solution with them. Once you reach a settlement, you can reply to Proton and discuss next steps.

Can I remove this music from all platforms?

Yes! If you want to go a step further and remove the release from all platforms, not just Spotify, you can contact support@protonradio.com. Give them the name of your label and the link to your release on Beatport, then ask them to remove it from all platforms.

Why might this have happened?

Here are some example scenarios, in our experience:

  • Your release might feature samples or vocals from another piece of music, and the artist didn't notify the label that they belonged to someone else. In these cases, it's good to speak with the artist and discuss the situation directly.

  • The copyright violation notice might have been sent by your own artist! This can happen if the artist wants to terminate their contract with you. In these cases, we recommend speaking with the artist directly.

  • The music might feature loops or a sample pack from a remix kit that wasn't royalty free, or did not have a license purchased. In these cases, we recommend speaking with the artist directly.

Is there a way to fight back?

If you disagree with the copyright claim being made against your music, and want to restore the music on Spotify, then we suggest hiring a music lawyer to help with next steps. Usually the cost of a lawyer is more than you'd earn from streaming on the track, so it may not be a best use of your resources.
