Types of Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste is categorized based on federal listings. If a waste appears on any of these lists and is referenced in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), it is classified as hazardous and must be disposed of properly.

P and U Listed Wastes

P- and U-listed hazardous wastes are primarily commercial-grade formulations of specific chemicals being disposed of. For more details, refer to the Code of Federal Regulations. Waste classified as P- or U-listed must meet the three criteria defined by the EPA:

  1. The waste must contain one of the chemicals listed on the P or U List.

  2. The chemical must be unused.

  3. The chemical must be in the form of a commercial chemical product.

Note: According to the EPA, a commercial product is defined as a chemical that is either 100% pure, of commercial grade, or the sole active ingredient in a chemical formulation.

F-List Waste

F-List waste is commonly generated in manufacturing and industrial processes. This type of waste is categorized into specific groups.

  • Wood Preserving Wastes

  • Dioxin-Containing Wastes

  • Refinery Wastewater Treatment Sludges

  • Spent Solvent Wastes

  • Electroplating and Other Metal Finishing Wastes

  • Production of Chlorinated Aliphatic Hydrocarbons

K-List Waste

K-Listed Wastes are classified under one of the 13 designated categories within various industries. Detailed descriptions of each K-Listed Waste can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations Section 261. The following 13 industries are known to generate K-Listed Waste:

  • Wood Preservation

  • Organic Chemical Manufacturing

  • Pesticide Manufacturing

  • Petroleum Refining

  • Veterinary Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

  • Inorganic Pigment Manufacturing

  • Inorganic Chemical Manufacturing

  • Explosives Manufacturing

  • Iron and Steel Production

  • Primary Aluminum Production

  • Secondary Lead Processing

  • Ink Formulation

  • Coking (Coal Processing to Produce Coke)

Characteristics of Hazardous Waste

Below are the four main characteristics of hazardous waste:

  • Ignitability
Ignitable wastes are materials that can easily catch fire under certain conditions. They may be spontaneously combustible or have a flashpoint of less than 140°F.

  • Corrosivity

Corrosive wastes are typically acids or bases with a pH of ≤ 2 or ≥ 12.5. These substances can corrode metal containers, including storage tanks, drums, and barrels.

  • Reactivity

Reactive wastes are unstable under normal conditions. They can cause explosions or release toxic fumes, gases, or vapors when heated, compressed, or mixed with water.

  • Toxicity
Toxic wastes are harmful or potentially fatal if ingested or absorbed. Improper disposal can lead to harmful substances being released into the environment through a process called leaching.

Hazardous Waste Disposal for Business and Healthcare Facilities

Hazardous waste is regulated by multiple government agencies, with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) serving as the primary federal authority that sets the regulatory requirements.

The EPA defines hazardous waste as any waste with properties that make it dangerous or potentially harmful to human health or the environment. This type of waste can take many forms, including liquids, gases, sludges, and solids. PureWay’s Hazardous Waste Disposal Services include:
