Proper shipping of veterinary and medical waste is critical to meet safety, legal, and environmental requirements. Different waste types have specific regulations and approved carriers. This section outlines the recommended shipping methods for sharps, pharmaceutical, and controlled substances.


Approved Shipping Methods for Sharps, Pharmaceutical, and Controlled Substances

This section outlines the approved shipping methods for different types of medical and pharmaceutical waste, including sharps, non-hazardous and hazardous pharmaceuticals, and controlled substances. It explains which carriers are permitted, the required packaging and labeling, and applicable regulatory requirements to ensure safe, compliant, and secure transport.

  • Sharps and Biohazardous Waste (UN3291)

    • USPS Mail-Back
      Allowed only with DOT-compliant packaging and labeling (UN3291).

    • Licensed Medical Waste Haulers
      Required for bulk pickup; must comply with DOT and state regulations.

  • Pharmaceutical Waste

    • Non-Hazardous and Non-Controlled.

      • FedEx, UPS, USPS

        Permitted if not classified as hazardous or controlled.

      • Mail-Back Programs

        Acceptable when using approved systems.

  • Hazardous Pharmaceuticals (RCRA)

    • Mail-Back Options

      PureWay does not currently offer mail-back services for hazardous pharmaceuticals. Only scheduled pickup is available. Contact customer support for pricing and options.

    • EPA-Registered Hazardous Waste Transporters

      Use of an EPA-registered hazardous waste transporter is required for all shipments.

    • Manifests and DOT Labels

      Manifests and DOT labels are mandatory and must comply with 40 CFR and 49 CFR regulations.

  • Controlled Substances (DEA-Regulated)

    • Reverse Distribution

      Use RP Returns DEA-registered reverse distributors. Ship via UPS or FedEx, as they must handle transport.

    • Secure Packaging

      Packages must be tamper-evident and include tracking.

    • USPS Restrictions

      USPS is not allowed for shipping controlled substances, except in limited DEA-approved cases.
