How to Transfer Files Using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

Transferring files between your local computer and your QuantVPS is a crucial aspect of managing your trading environment. Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) provides a convenient way to achieve this. This guide will walk you through the steps for both Windows and macOS users.

Quick Tip: Copy and Paste Method

The easiest way to transfer files is to simply copy the file from your local computer and paste it into your VPS window.

  • While the transfer is running, do not perform any other actions, as it may disrupt the process.

    • If you’re transferring a very large file, the system may initially estimate a long time (e.g., 12 hours), but it typically completes within 60–90 minutes.

Transferring Files (Windows)

For Windows users, integrating your local drives into your RDP session is straightforward:

Step 1: Open Remote Desktop Connection

  • Search for “Remote Desktop Connection” in your Windows search bar and open the application.

Step 2: Access Local Resources Settings

  • Click on “Show Options” to expand the settings.

  • Navigate to the “Local Resources” tab.

Step 3: Configure Local Devices and Resources

  • In the “Local devices and resources” section, click on “More…”

Transferring Files (macOS)

For macOS users, the process involves configuring your Microsoft Remote Desktop application:

Step 1: Open Microsoft Remote Desktop

  • Launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop application on your Mac.

Step 2: Edit Your Connection

  • Right-click (or Control-click) your saved QuantVPS connection and select “Edit.”

Step 3: Add Local Folder Redirection

  • In the settings window, go to the “Folders” tab.

  • Click the ”+” button to add a folder.

Step 4: Choose Local Folder

  • Browse to and select the folder you want to share.

  • Click “Add” to include it in the list. Repeat if needed.

Step 5: Connect to Your VPS

  • Close the settings window and connect to your QuantVPS.

Step 6: Access Shared Folders on Your VPS

  • Open “This PC” once connected.

  • Your shared Mac folders will appear under “Redirected drives and folders”, ready for file transfers.

Alternative File Transfer Methods

In addition to RDP, here are other reliable ways to transfer files:

  • Cloud Storage

Use Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive to upload files from one system and download from another.

  • FTP/SFTP

Use an FTP or SFTP client for larger or automated transfers, ideal for frequent file exchanges.

  • Email

Send small files as email attachments for quick one-time transfers.

By leveraging these methods, you can ensure seamless file management between your local system and your QuantVPS, supporting your trading activities efficiently.
