How to Manage Windows Updates on Your Trading Server (Without Interruptions)

Keeping your server updated is critical for security and stability — but updates should never interfere with your trading activities. Instead of disabling updates entirely, we strongly recommend scheduling them to run automatically outside of trading hours.

Follow the steps below to configure update settings using the Local Group Policy Editor.

🔧 Step-by-Step: Schedule Automatic Windows Updates via Group Policy

1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor

  • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.

  • Type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.

2. Navigate to Windows Update Settings

Go to:

Computer Configuration └── Administrative Templates └── Windows Components └── Windows Update

3. Configure Automatic Updates

  • Double-click Configure Automatic Updates.

  • Set it to Enabled.

  • Under Options, select:

    • “Auto download and schedule the install”

  • Choose a specific day/time — ideally during weekends or other low-activity periods.

  • Click Apply, then OK.

✅ Best Practices for Update Management

  • 🕒 Schedule Updates During Non-Trading Hours

Avoid performance interruptions by setting updates during weekends or overnight windows when markets are closed.

  • 🔄 Check for Updates Regularly

Even if automatic updates are configured, it’s a good idea to manually check for updates every couple of weeks.

  • 🔍 Verify Application Performance Post-Update

After updates install, confirm that your trading platforms (e.g., NinjaTrader, R|Trader) launch and run as expected.
