Fix a Failed Migration: Disk Check and Repair

If your VPS migration failed, the most common cause is filesystem errors on the C: drive. The migration process reads every block of your disk, and errors that Windows tolerates day-to-day will stop a migration cold.

The fix is a one-time disk check and repair (chkdsk /f). Because Windows can't repair the drive it's running from, the check is scheduled to run during a reboot, before Windows loads. We've packaged the whole thing into a tool you just double-click.

Run the tool

  1. Download QuantVPS-DiskRepair.zip on your VPS (the machine with the failed migration — not your home computer).

  2. Save your work and fully close your trading platforms (NinjaTrader, TWS, etc.) — the VPS is about to restart.

  3. Double-click the zip → then double-click QuantVPS-DiskRepair.bat. Click Yes on the UAC prompt.

  4. Type Y and press Enter. The VPS restarts in about 20 seconds and the disk check runs automatically during the reboot.

What to expect during the check

  • After the restart, Windows runs the disk check before loading the desktop. Your RDP connection will not work during this time.

  • The check can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on disk size and how many errors it finds.

  • The VPS may appear stuck, offline, or on a black/text-only screen. This is normal. Do not power off, reset, or force-restart the VPS while the check is running. Interrupting a repair can make filesystem damage worse.

After the check finishes

When the VPS boots back to the normal Windows desktop:

  1. Reply to your support ticket to let us know the disk check completed.

  2. Our team verifies the results, reboots the VPS once more, and re-runs your migration — you don't need to do anything else.

If you want to see the results yourself: open Event Viewer (Start → type eventvwr) → Windows Logs → Application, and look for the most recent event from source Wininit (Event 1001) or Chkdsk. The event text contains the full report — how many files were checked and what was repaired.

FAQ

Is my data safe? chkdsk /f repairs filesystem structures (the index that tracks where files live). It does not delete your documents or platform data. In rare cases involving heavily corrupted files, recovered fragments are placed in C:\found.000— support can help you review these if they appear.

The VPS has been "checking" for a very long time — is it stuck? Checks over an hour are uncommon but possible on large or heavily damaged disks. If it exceeds ~2 hours, open a ticket (from your home computer) and we'll check the console on the host side. Do not power it off yourself.

Will this show up in the QuantVPS Diagnostic report? Yes — the restart appears as a planned reboot (Event 1074, initiated by shutdown.exe), not a crash. If you run the Diagnostic afterward, the reboot cluster will be labeled planned/indigo.

Can I just run chkdsk C: /f myself in Command Prompt? Yes — that's exactly what the tool does. It answers the "schedule this volume to be checked at next restart?" prompt for you and handles the restart. The tool just makes it one double-click instead of three manual steps.
