What are the metrics for a pitcher that affect the QScore?

What factors into my QScore as a pitcher?

  1. Max Fastball - How hard do you throw off the mound? This metric shows the pitcher’s fastest fastball. This metric importance has risen over the past few years in the recruiting world. Much like exit velocity, this metric will tell you what type of pitcher you profile as. For example, lets say you are 16U and are throwing a max fastball at 84 mph. This is great! Again, this is above average for your age group. Now does this mean you can just rear back and throw as hard as you can every time? No, you still need to know how to pitch, not just with your fastball, but with 1-2 other pitches as well. At QuestFit we do believe velocity is important, but it is just part of evaluating a pitcher. It is not the be-all and end-all. A high velocity on your fastball will definitely gain interest from colleges, but they are looking at much more than how fast you can throw a ball. They are looking at mechanics, control, height, weight, athleticism, spin rate, and pitchability among other preferences coaches may have for their pitchers.

  2. Height- College recruiters are not looking for a finished product, they are looking for projectable athletes. One of the main projectable traits recruiters look at is height. Height is important for pitching for many reasons such as throwing downhill, large stride lengths, health reasons and many more. Obviously, there are many pitchers that are under 6ft that have proven to be successful pitchers in the college and pro ranks, but most recruiters heavily factor in height when recruiting pitchers.
