Learn how Admins can model performance for comp plans

Updated over a month ago

Admins can use the Modeling tab on the plan details page to predict comp plan performance.

To start, click the Plans page from the left-hand navigation and then click a plan to go to the plan details page. If you have not created a plan yet, you'll need to do that first. In addition, you'll want to ensure that you've added all the necessary components into the plan to capture the compensation plan components (i.e. Quotas, Bonuses, SPIFs, etc.)

Modeling Overview

The 'Modeling' tab on the plan details page allows you to visualize how your plan will perform for a single member annually, depending on their attainment achievement.

Below is a detailed overview of how to navigate the Modeling tab.

  1. Annual Earnings & Attainment: the total annualized earnings and attainment for a single member based on the configured plan and achievement percentage(s) and/or target values entered in the component cards (2)

  2. Model Component Attainment: Preview the progress towards the quota and/or target value, expand the component card, and use the slider to adjust values or enter them directly into the cell. Click 'view rates' to review the default rates used for modeling. See the section below for more information on how certain components are modeled.

  3. Earnings & Attainment Over Time: Review the earnings and attainment over time, where the attainment percentage is the y-axis, and the earnings is the x-axis. Hover over the line graph to preview the earnings at a specific attainment percentage.

  4. Export Modeling Details: Export a CSV of modeling data containing earnings by component from 0% to 150% quota attainment. Before exporting, you'll be prompted to define a target for components without a quota.

Component Scenarios

Continue reading below for more detailed information on how attainment data will be modeled depending on the component type.

No Quota

Components without quotas require you to enter a target value to calculate earnings based on projected attainment. You can update the target and attainment amount anytime; earnings will recalculate after clicking 'Save changes'.

Example:

  • Target Value: $25,000

  • Attainment Percentage: 75%

  • Modeled Attainment: $18,750

  • Earnings Rate: 8%

  • Modeled Earnings: $1,500

Quotas Recurring

Recurring quota components are the “standard” component cards in modeling. For these components, you can adjust the attainment value using the slider or enter an attainment percentage directly from 0% to 150%. The quota attainment percentage will be set to 75% by default.

Example:

  • Quota: $175,000 Quarterly

  • Modeled Quota: $700,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 75%

  • Modeled Attainment: $525,000

  • Earnings Rate: 10%

  • Modeled Earnings: $52,500

Quotas Changing Over Time

For quotas that change over time, the quota periods will summed to annualize the quota. For these components, you can adjust the attainment value using the slider or enter an attainment percentage directly from 0% to 150%. The quota attainment percentage will be set to 75% by default.

Example:

  • Quota: Q1 = $1,000, Q2 = $2,000, Q3 = $3,000, Q4 = $4,000

  • Modeled Quota: $10,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 75%

  • Modeled Attainment: $7,500

  • Earnings Rate: 10%

  • Modeled Earnings: $750

Note: If the quotas for only Q1 and Q2 are defined, we would add those to get $3,000 bi-annually and then multiply by 2 to get a $6,000 annual quota. If the component were set up with more than 4 quarters of quotas defined, we would use the first 4 quarters to determine the modeled quota.

Cumulative Quotas

For modeling, cumulative quotas don’t impact the calculated annual quota because modeling is not deal-specific. For example, if I have a $1,000 monthly quota for 12 months, the annual quota will still be $12,000, regardless of whether I specify that it’s cumulative.

Shared Quotas

For shared quotas, attainment will be distributed proportionally across all components since modeling is not based on specific deals but on shared quota attainment. By default, the quota attainment percentage will be set to 75% across all components. For example, if two components contribute to the shared quota, each component's quota attainment percentage will be set to 37.5%.

Example:

  • Shared Quota: $10,000 Monthly

  • # of Shared Components: 3

  • Modeled Quota: $120,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 50% per component (150% total)

  • Modeled Attainment: $7,500

  • Earnings Rate:

    • Component 1: 0-50% = 5%, 50-100%= 10%, +100% =15%

    • Component 2: 0-100% = 10%, 100-150% = 15%

    • Component 3: 0-100%, = 30%, +100% = 35%

  • Modeled Earnings: $32,000

    • Component 1: $6,000

    • Component 2: $7,000

    • Component 3: $19,000

Note: If there is a milestone bonus component on a shared quota, milestone bonus component earnings that are based on the attainment of other components will be calculated if other component attainment requirements are met. Therefore, you cannot change the attainment model of these components.

Attainment Multipliers

The attainment value will be multiplied for components with attainment multipliers based on the component details multiplier. You can adjust the attainment value using the slider or enter an attainment percentage directly from 0% to 150% for these components.

Example:

  • Quota: $100,000 Quarterly

  • Attainment Multiplier: 2x

  • Modeled Quota: $400,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 100%

  • Modeled Attainment: $800,000

  • Earnings Rate: 10%

  • Modeled Earnings: $80,000

Different Attainment & Earnings Fields

On components with different fields used to measure attainment and calculate earnings, the calculated earnings will be based on the earnings field entry, not the attainment percentage entered. However, you can still adjust the attainment percentage or target value to project an accurate attainment amount.

Example:

  • Quota: $10,000 Quarterly

  • Attainment Field: ARR

  • Modeled Quota: $40,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 100%

  • Modeled Attainment: $800,000

  • Earnings Rate: $100 per Qualified Opportunity

  • Earnings Field: Qualified Opportunities

  • Qualified Opportunities: 100

  • Modeled Earnings: $100,000

Rates Changing Over Time

If the default rates in a component change over time, the average of those rates will be used to model earnings.

Example:

  • Earnings Rate:

    • Q1 = 10%

    • Q2 = 20%

    • Q3 = 30%

    • Q4 = 40%

  • Modeled Earnings Rate: 25%

Component Dependencies

Earnings may not appear for components with dependencies unless the conditions are met. To trigger earnings on these components, adjust the attainment values on the component(s) dictating the dependency conditions.

Example:

  • Component 1:

    • Quota: $100,000 Quarterly

    • Modeled Quota: $400,000 Annually

    • Earnings Rate: 10%

  • Component 2:

    • Quota: $5,000 Quarterly

    • Modeled Quota: $20,000 Annually

    • Modeled Attainment: 100%

    • Earnings Rate: 5%

    • Dependency: Component 1 Attainment = 100%

    • Earnings:

      • $1,000 if Component 1 Attainment >=100%

      • $0 if Component 1 Attainment <100%
