Learn how Admins can model performance for comp plans

Updated over 11 months ago

Admins can use the Modeling tab on the plan details page to predict comp plan performance.

To get started, click the Plans page from the left hand navigation and then click a plan to go to the plan details page. If you have not created a plan yet, you'll need to do that first. In addition, you'll want to ensure that you've added all the necessary paths into the plan to capture the compensation plan components (i.e. Quotas, Bonuses, SPIFs, etc.)

Modeling Overview

From the 'Modeling' tab on the plan details page, you can visualize how your plan will perform for a single member on an annual basis depending on attainment achievement.

Below you will find a detailed overview of how to navigate the Modeling tab.

  1. Annual Earnings & Attainment: the total annualized earnings and attainment for a single member based on the configured plan and achievement percentage(s) and/or target values entered in the path cards (2)

  2. Model Path Attainment: Preview the progress towards the quota and/or target value, expand path card and use slider to adjust values or enter directly into cell. Click 'view rates' to review the default rates used for modeling. For more information on how certain paths are modeled, see section below.

  3. Earnings & Attainment Over Time: Review the earnings and attainment over time, where the attainment percentage is the y-axis, and the earnings is the x-axis. Hover over the line graph to preview the earnings at a specific attainment percentage.

  4. Export Modeling Details: Export a CSV of modeling data containing earnings by path from 0-150% quota attainment. For paths with no quota, you'll be prompted to define a target before exporting.

Path Scenarios

For more detailed information on how attainment data will be modeled depending on the type of path, continuing reading below.

No Quota

Paths without quotas will require you to enter a target value in order to calculate earnings based on projected attainment. The target and attainment amount can be updated at any time - earnings will re-calculate after clicking “Save changes.”

Example:

  • Target Value: $25,000

  • Attainment Percentage: 75%

  • Modeled Attainment: $18,750

  • Earnings Rate: 8%

  • Modeled Earnings: $1,500

Quotas Recurring

Recurring quota paths are the “standard” path cards in modeling. For these paths, you can adjust the attainment value using the slider or enter an attainment percentage directly from 0-150%. Quota attainment percentage will be set to 75% by default.

Example:

  • Quota: $175,000 Quarterly

  • Modeled Quota: $700,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 75%

  • Modeled Attainment: $525,000

  • Earnings Rate: 10%

  • Modeled Earnings: $52,500

Quotas Changing Over Time

For quotas that change over time, the quota periods will summed into order to annualize the quota. For these paths, you can adjust the attainment value using the slider or enter an attainment percentage directly from 0-150%. Quota attainment percentage will be set to 75% by default.

Example:

  • Quota: Q1 = $1,000, Q2 = $2,000, Q3 = $3,000, Q4 = $4,000

  • Modeled Quota: $10,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 75%

  • Modeled Attainment: $7,500

  • Earnings Rate: 10%

  • Modeled Earnings: $750

Note: If the quotas for only Q1 and Q2 are defined, we would add those to get $3,000 bi-annually and then multiply by 2 to get a $6,000 annual quota. If the path was set up with more than 4 quarters of quotas defined, we would use the first 4 quarters to determine the modeled quota.

Cumulative Quotas

For modeling, cumulative quotas don’t have an impact on the calculated annual quota because modeling is not deal specific. Ex. if I have a $1,000 monthly quota for 12 months, the annual quota will still be $12,000 whether I specify that it’s cumulative or not.

Shared Quotas

For shared quotas, the attainment will be distributed proportionally across all paths since modeling does is not based on specific deals and instead, shared quota attainment. Quota attainment percentage will be set to 75% by default across all paths. For example, if two paths contribute towards the shared quota, each path's quota attainment percentage will be set to 37.5%.

Example:

  • Shared Quota: $10,000 Monthly

  • # of Shared Paths: 3

  • Modeled Quota: $120,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 50% per path (150% total)

  • Modeled Attainment: $7,500

  • Earnings Rate:

    • Path 1: 0-50% = 5%, 50-100%= 10%, +100% =15%

    • Path 2: 0-100% = 10%, 100-150% = 15%

    • Path 3: 0-100%, = 30%, +100% = 35%

  • Modeled Earnings: $32,000

    • Path 1: $6,000

    • Path 2: $7,000

    • Path 3: $19,000

Note: If there is a milestone bonus path on a shared quota, milestone bonus path earnings that are based on attainment of other paths will be calculated if other path attainment requirements are met. Therefore, you cannot change the attainment model of these paths.

Attainment Multipliers

For path will attainment multipliers, the attainment value will be multiplied based on the multiplier in the path details. For these paths, you can adjust the attainment value using the slider or enter an attainment percentage directly from 0-150%.

Example:

  • Quota: $100,000 Quarterly

  • Attainment Multiplier: 2x

  • Modeled Quota: $400,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 100%

  • Modeled Attainment: $800,000

  • Earnings Rate: 10%

  • Modeled Earnings: $80,000

Different Attainment & Earnings Fields

On paths with different fields used to measure attainment and calculate earnings, the calculated earnings will be based on the earnings field entry and not the attainment percentage entered. You will still have the ability to adjust the attainment percentage or target value so you can project an accurate attainment amount.

Example:

  • Quota: $10,000 Quarterly

  • Attainment Field: ARR

  • Modeled Quota: $40,000 Annually

  • Attainment Percentage: 100%

  • Modeled Attainment: $800,000

  • Earnings Rate: $100 per Qualified Opportunity

  • Earnings Field: Qualified Opportunities

  • Qualified Opportunities: 100

  • Modeled Earnings: $100,000

Rates Changing Over Time

If the default rates in a path change over time, then the average of those rates will be used when modeling earnings.

Example:

  • Earnings Rate:

    • Q1 = 10%

    • Q2 = 20%

    • Q3 = 30%

    • Q4 = 40%

  • Modeled Earnings Rate: $25%

Path Dependencies

For paths with path dependencies, earnings may not appear unless the conditions are met. To trigger earnings on these paths, adjust the attainment values on the path(s) dictating the path dependency conditions.

Example:

  • Path 1:

    • Quota: $100,000 Quarterly

    • Modeled Quota: $400,000 Annually

    • Earnings Rate: 10%

  • Path 2:

    • Quota: $5,000 Quarterly

    • Modeled Quota: $20,000 Annually

    • Modeled Attainment: 100%

    • Earnings Rate: 5%

    • Path Dependency: Path 1 Attainment = 100%

    • Earnings:

      • $1,000 if Path 1 Attainment >=100%

      • $0 if Path 1 Attainment <100%
