First, you can keep going without it. Tap “Write” and type your answer, or tap the small microphone key on your phone’s keyboard to dictate into the text box. That works even when the website’s microphone is blocked. Your answers already saved are never lost.
1. Reload the page
Many small glitches disappear after a reload.
On a phone or tablet: pull the page down, or tap the reload icon.
On a computer: press Ctrl+R (Windows) or Cmd+R (Mac).
2. Allow the microphone
Android phone (Chrome)
Tap the icon just to the left of the web address.
Tap Permissions, then Microphone, and choose Allow.
Reload the page.
Still blocked? Open your phone’s Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Microphone, and choose Allow only while using the app.
iPhone or iPad (Safari)
Tap aA in the address bar.
Tap Website Settings, then Microphone, and choose Allow.
Reload the page.
Still blocked? Open Settings → Safari (on iOS 18 and later: Settings → Apps → Safari) → Microphone, and choose Allow or Ask.
iPhone or iPad with Chrome: open Settings → Chrome (on iOS 18 and later: Settings → Apps → Chrome) and turn on Microphone.
Computer (Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox): click the icon to the left of the web address, set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page.
3. Close other apps using the microphone
A phone call, a video call or another browser tab can keep the microphone busy. Close them, then try again.
4. Update your phone or computer
Older systems sometimes can’t use the microphone on websites. Install any available update, restart, and try again.
5. Try another browser or device
Chrome usually works best. If your phone still refuses, try a computer or a tablet: your book and your answers are the same everywhere.
