When you have a WooCommerce site and you want to test your payment gateways, it helps to have a test product that you can turn to if you are experiencing issues.

Often we find that installed plugins or customizations to the WooCommerce shipping and product areas can cause checkout conflicts.  Those conflicts are often blamed on the Payment Gateway, when the issue is actually tied to something upstream.

Setting up a test product as described below will help you to strip away several layers and push a test product out without any tax or shipping rules adding fees or complications to your checkout.

Review this screenshot - we'll refer back to each highlighted area.

The Product Name will also be used as the 'slug' that shows up in the URL in most installations.

In this case, if you used 'Penny Test Product' you'd be able to find you test product at:

 yoursite.com/product/penny-test-product

Make sure your product is set to a 'Simple product' and also click on the 'Virtual' checkbox.  Virtual items will bypass any shipping fee's you have setup, so that your penny test product doesn't get a shipping charge applied when you're testing your site.

If you're site is 'live' or you want to keep your test product active later, you can also click on Catalog Visibility in the Publish area and choose 'hidden' which will leave the product out of your products display and product searches.  You'll need to use the URL to access the item directly as it won't appear when you go to yoursite.com/shop

Once you've Published the product, you can load it in your web browser and add it to your cart to test your checkout experience.
