The contents of your Box cache will expire after 30 days. After this point, the cache needs to be refilled. In some cases, you might need to refill the server cache sooner than 30 days. This is where the Timeout option comes in.

Setting the cache timeout

  1. Go to the Settings tab in your Box overview.

  2. Select the submenu item Cache under the menu item Server on the left.

  3. Open the Expert Mode section

  4. Now select the desired cache Timeout from the dropdown.

  5. Confirm your entry by clicking on Apply.

How the timeout works

The effect of this setting is comparable to emptying the cache. If you set the cache timeout to one minute, for example, your page will behave as if the Box cache is cleared every minute.

This is what is happening in the background:
The content of the Box cache has a certain lifetime. By default, this is set to 30 days. After this period, the content of the cache becomes "invalid" and must be replaced by a current version.

🕐 A change in the cache timeout is therefore roughly comparable to an automatic emptying of the cache.

If you set the cache timeout to one minute, the contents of the Box cache expires after one minute and must be refilled. For visitors to your site, this means that an uncached page load occurs once every minute.

⚠️ Important: The cache timeout always refers to all posts and pages of your Box. That means you should only change this setting if you really need a shorter cache timeout.

Keep in mind that normal changes to your page, e.g. changes to blog posts or pages, are already taken into account by the cache. You do not have to manually empty your site's cache to make important changes visible.
