Overview
Ranchbot liquid level sensors (water, diesel, liquid fertiliser) use pressure to measure the amount of liquid level above it.
At Ranchbot, we know that each water point and set-up can be slightly different from the next.
For example, what if your probe isn't sitting at the very bottom of your tank or reservoir?
'Offset height' is a simple way to adjust the height to reflect these differences.
Below we use a couple of examples to illustrate when it can be beneficial.
โ ๏ธ Note: When an offset is added, it is added to readings from that point onwards but is not applied retrospectively.
Offset Explained
Example 1: Adjusting the offset for a water tank's actual height
Imagine you have an 80 inch tall tank that has a 10 inch layer of thick mud at the bottom. The water level probe sits on top of that and, therefore, is 10 inch from the bottom of the tank.
When the water level probe detects 40 inch of water above it, it will show a reading of 40 / 80 inches (50%). However, this may mislead you to think there is 50% capacity left in this tank when the bottom 10 inches is mud/dirt.
By adjusting the offset (add 10 inches), the water level will show 50 / 80 inches in your tank and read 60% capacity. Therefore, you know there is only 30 inches or 37.5% available space in that tank.
Example 2: Adjusting the offset to show the true water available
On the other hand, imagine you have a 80 inches tall tank with an outflow pipe that sits about halfway up the tank. Your water level would never go below the outflow pipe, and the tank would never drop below 50% capacity.
Therefore, when the water level reading is 50% full, the tank is essentially empty as water will no longer flow out of the pipe.
By adjusting the offset (subtract 40 inches), we update the 'true bottom' to the 40 inches mark on the tank. Now, when the tank has 40 inches of water, it will show as 0%. Now just with a glance at MyRanchbot, you can see how much water is really available in your tank.
How to update an offset in MyRanchbot
Log into the MyFarmbot/Ranchbot platform
Click into the liquid level sensor you want to update (e.g. water level, dam level, fuel level etc.)
Click into Sensor Settings
Scroll to the offset field
Edit the value
Click Save
The new offset will be applied with the next transmissions.
โ Note: Changes to offset will NOT be applied retrospectively
