Use merge variables in messages

Step editors and templates insert Contact and Sender tokens such as {{first_name}} and {{sender_name}}. Unknown tokens stay typed. Notes cap at 300.

Campaign Message steps and templates insert Contact and Sender tokens such as {{first_name}} and {{sender_name}}. Unknown tokens stay as you typed them, and connection notes cap at 300 characters.

Insert a token

Use the merge picker on a Message step or a template. Type the braces only if you need a token the picker already lists.

  1. Open a campaign Sequence tab and add or select a Message step. InMail cannot launch. Use Message, not InMail.

  2. Place the cursor in the body or in a connection note.

  3. Insert a Contact token: {{first_name}}, {{last_name}}, {{full_name}}, {{company}}, {{title}}, or {{headline}}.

  4. Insert a Sender token: {{sender_name}} or {{sender_first_name}}.

  5. Keep a connection note at or under 300 characters after the tokens resolve.

Owner or admin can store the same tokens on Settings → Templates. A Message step can use a template or a body.

What happens at send time

Known tokens fill from the contact or the sender. If a known field is empty, that token becomes a blank. An unknown token, such as {{city}}, stays typed as {{city}}. Fix the spelling if you meant a listed token.
