Don’t Let Politicians Take Over Redistricting
Years ago, voters made it clear that politicians should not draw their own district lines. Instead, Californians created an independent citizens’ commission to ensure fairness and transparency in the redistricting process. That reform was a major victory for accountability and trust in our elections.
Now, Prop 50 threatens to reverse that progress by returning redistricting power to politicians. Even worse, it shuts ordinary citizens out of the process. Instead of public meetings and open input from communities, politicians could redraw maps behind closed doors with little oversight. The result? Certain neighborhoods, particularly underrepresented ones, risk being divided or ignored for purely political advantage.
And let’s not forget the cost. Prop 50 would trigger a special election that could cost California more than $250 million. That’s a considerable price tag for something voters already said they don’t want. Just because other states are changing their maps doesn’t mean we should follow. We’ve already built a fair system. Prop 50 is a power grab, and Californians should vote NO.
