How to update a client's credit card details

If you need to change a client's payment card there are three options. We recommend letting the client update their own details when possible.

Option 1 — Let the client update their card (recommended)

  1. Go to the Agreements page: Agreements

  2. Search for the client.

  3. Click Copy Link next to their agreement.

  4. Send the link to the client so they can securely update their billing details themselves.

Option 2 — Update yourself via Rechargly Agreement

  1. Go to the Agreements page: Agreements

  2. Search for the client.

  3. Click Copy Link next to their agreement.

  4. Update the billing method.

  5. Go into the Stripe Customer Dashboard and ensure the latest invoice has been collected.

Note: For option 1 & 2 - the new payment method will be automatically set as the default.

Option 3 — Update yourself via Stripe (card only)

We don't suggest you use this method, however it is possible by following the steps below:

  1. Find the customer (filter by email).

  2. Scroll to Payment methods.

  3. Click the three dots and update or add a new card, then make it the default payment method.

Troubleshooting: Expiration date or card details not matching after update

If the agreements page shows incorrect card details (such as the wrong expiration date) after updating:

  1. Open the customer in the Stripe Customer Dashboard.

  2. Check the Payment methods section. Multiple updates may have created duplicate payment methods.

  3. Identify the correct card (match the last 4 digits and expiration date with the client's actual card).

  4. Set the correct card as the default payment method by clicking the three dots and selecting Set as default.

  5. Remove any old or duplicate payment methods to prevent confusion.

  6. Return to the agreements page in Rechargly to confirm the displayed details now match the correct card.
