Shopify merchants can offer in-store credits as a reward to advocates and affiliates. Store credits are a form of payment that customers can use to make purchases on your store.

Note: Shopify store credit can be used only on your online store and when advocates or affiliates are logged in through customer accounts. Customers can't use the credits on other online stores and for specific order types.

For more information, read the Store credits article in the Shopify help center.

Using store credits for Shopify (Beta)

To use store credits as your advocate or affiliate reward:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Campaigns > Select your campaign. In the Set rewards section, click Advocate reward.

  2. Select a reward tier to Edit.

  3. Select the Store credits reward type.

  4. In the Store credit value, select fixed amount or percentage (coming soon) and set the value.

  5. Add a Reward description, which will reflect in your emails, pages, and widgets.

  6. Save the changes.

Tip: If your product costs more than $100, a fixed amount tends to be more appealing. If your product costs less than $100, a percentage discount is usually more effective. Read about the Rule of 100.

Store credits vs. coupons

Store credit acts like cash in a customer's account, encouraging repeat purchases and larger orders since they can be accumulated for future use. They help build long-term engagement in referral or affiliate programs.

Coupons provide one-time discounts, driving immediate sales but offering less incentive for ongoing referrals since they can’t be accumulated. Learn more

Store credits (Shopify) FAQ

Can I set expiration dates for the store credit reward?

Not right now. If you're interested in setting expiry dates for store credit rewards in Shopify, contact us.

Can I use store credits if I'm on the legacy customer accounts experience?

Yes, but your customers should still be logged in to use store credits. If you use legacy customer accounts, in Shopify admin go to Settings > Customer accounts > URL. This URL gives customers access to customer accounts. Provide the URL to your customer so they can log in and use store credits.

Why can't my customer use their store credit reward at my store?

Store credits can be used when your advocates or affiliates are logged in to your online store through customer accounts. Shopify has the following usage limitations on store credits:

  • Sales channels - Store credit can only be used as a payment method on your online store. It's not accepted on other sales channels.

  • Order types - Store credit can't be used for draft orders, edited orders, B2B orders, or Point of Sale (POS) transactions.

  • Subscriptions - Customers can use store credit for the initial purchase of a subscription, but not for recurring subscription bills.

  • Currency - If a customer has store credit in multiple currencies, only the balance that matches the currency of your checkout is displayed.

  • Partial payments - Customers must use the full store credit amount as a payment method. Partial payments with store credit are not allowed.

  • Credit limit - You can issue store credit up to a maximum of $10,000 USD on a single customer account.

Why can't I enable store credits as a reward?

To activate store credits, you must be the store owner or have a user role with the following permissions in Shopify admin:

  • View store credit transactions

  • Edit store credit

If you're struggling to select Store credits as the advocate reward, reach out to the store owner or an admin to enable the feature.
