Find a Quiet Setting
Testing in a separate, quiet room reduces distractions, helps manage sensory overload or anxiety for children, and allows them to focus better on the assessment.
Turn off Computer-Led Audio
By turning off the MEFS automated voice, you can slow the pace down to assist children with auditory processing challenges or EF delays. When audio is off, you read the prompts aloud and control the delivery speed. You must stick to the script and not repeat instructions, as doing so can inflate the child's score.
To turn the voice off: tap the upper right icon (three lines, downward arrow), then toggle off Computer-led.
Practice Drag-and-Drop Interactions
Some children may need brief practice with the drag-and-drop mechanics before beginning the MEFS assessment, particularly those with limited experience using a mouse or touchscreen, or children who are developmentally younger in their fine motor or technology skills.
To support these children, consider offering a short, low-stakes warm-up activity before the assessment — such as a simple drag-and-drop game or an app unrelated to the MEFS items — so the child can become comfortable with the interaction before the assessment begins. Alternatively, the examiner may demonstrate the drag-and-drop motion and allow the child to practice on a neutral item before proceeding.
Provide Hand-over-Hand Assistance
For children who are unable to drag and drop the cards independently or press too hard (common with toddlers), physical guidance is allowed.
Guide their hand to show that only light pressure is needed.
If that doesn't work, ask the child to touch the box where the card should go
Once they've indicated a choice, you can place the card for them.
Continue only after you've clearly identified which box the child intends on each trial.
Adjust the Starting Level (requires support from Reflection Sciences)
The MEFS automatically assigns a starting level based on the child's age:
Level | Age Range |
Level 1 | 24-35 months |
Level 2 | 36–41 months |
Level 3 | 42–47 months |
Level 4 | 48–59 months |
Level 5 | 60 months and older |
In some cases, starting at a lower level may improve engagement by easing the child into the assessment. If you think a child needs to start at a lower level, please contact support@reflectionsciences.com.
Document the Use of Accommodations
When accommodations are used during MEFS administration, it is important to record this information thoroughly and consistently. Documentation should note which accommodation(s) were provided, the reason for their use, and any observations about how the child responded to or interacted with the assessment under those conditions.
