Deliver with a DoorDash Drive courier

Connect your DoorDash Drive account to XPRIO and have your orders delivered by a Dasher when you have no driver, or to absorb the rush. Available in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Written by XPRIO

DoorDash Drive gives you access to the Dashers of the DoorDash network without going through an ordering marketplace: the customer orders in your own app, under your name, and DoorDash only provides the driver. You pay each trip at a flat rate, with no commission on your sales.

In XPRIO this is called a partner courier. You connect it once for your business, then decide, store by store, whether it delivers all your orders or only backs up your own drivers.

What to know before you start

  • The DoorDash Drive account is yours. You create it with DoorDash, and DoorDash bills you for each trip. XPRIO takes nothing.

  • Live access requires DoorDash's approval. DoorDash reviews Drive integration requests quarterly and does not accept every business. Expect several weeks between your request and production access. The test environment is available right away, so you can prepare and test everything in XPRIO in the meantime.

  • The customer pays your delivery fee, the one set on your store, collected with the order. The cost of the DoorDash trip is billed separately, depending on the city, the distance and the time of day. If your fee is lower than the trip, you cover the difference; if it is higher, you keep it. Once connected, XPRIO shows you the price of a typical trip.

  • Online payment is mandatory. A partner courier collects nothing. The partner courier modes only become available once card payment online (Stripe) is set up in your app. Setting up your payment methods

  • Countries covered: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. XPRIO only offers DoorDash Drive for stores located in these countries, and checks every address at checkout.

  • No handover code with DoorDash: the proof of delivery is a photo taken by the Dasher.

  • A cancellation may be charged once a Dasher has been assigned. XPRIO warns you before you confirm.

Step 1: create your DoorDash developer account

  1. Open developer.doordash.com and click Sign up (or Get started). Create the account with your business email.

  2. After signing in, the portal asks you to create an organization: enter your business name. If you have stores in several countries, DoorDash requires one organization per country.

  3. On the Choose your integration screen, tick Drive ("For offering delivery from your own website or app, fulfilled by Dashers") and click Next. Do not choose Marketplace: that is for selling on the DoorDash app, which is not what you want.

  4. On the About your integration screen, answer the questionnaire:

    • Do you already work with other third-party delivery platforms?: tick what is true for you, or None.

    • What types of businesses will your integration support?: Restaurant.

    • Which best describes your product?: Direct to brand (you integrate for your own brand).

    • How many stores or locations does your product serve today?: the number of your stores.

    • How many locations do you expect… within six months?: stay realistic, DoorDash states this figure may become a contractual commitment.

    • Which region will this integration launch in?: the country of your stores.

    • What's your company website?: your website, or the address of your XPRIO app.

  5. On Scale and timeline: enter 1 week and right away, the integration is already built by XPRIO.

  6. On Partnership details and Drive integration, describe your business in one sentence. To the question "Can a store use more than one delivery service provider?", answer No: in XPRIO, a store uses one partner courier at a time.

  7. Click Finish. The portal opens on the Add integrations page: the Drive: Request on-demand deliveries card is marked Pending approval, and the left menu shows Drive · Pending activation.

You can follow the status of the request on this page and in the notification hub (bell icon, top right). DoorDash emails you when the request is accepted.

Step 2: create an access key (available right away)

Even while pending approval, you can create a test key.

  1. In the left menu of the portal, click Credentials.

  2. Click the red Create credential button at the top right.

  3. Give it a name (for example "XPRIO"), choose the environment Sandbox (test) or Production (live, only available after approval), and the Drive API. Confirm.

  4. A panel opens on the right with a yellow banner "Save your signing secret!". Three values appear, each with a copy icon:

    • Signing secret: shown once, now. Copy it immediately and keep it: it will never be shown again.

    • Developer ID: a string of letters and digits with hyphens.

    • Key ID: same format.

  5. Close the panel. Your key appears in the list with its name, environment (Sandbox in green) and Key ID.

Sandbox and Production keys are different: you will create a second, Production key after approval.

Step 3: connect DoorDash Drive to XPRIO

  1. In XPRIO, left menu, open App Configuration then Partner couriers.

  2. On the DoorDash Drive card, click Connect.

  3. Under Environment, choose Test for a Sandbox key, Production for a Production key.

  4. Paste the three values from step 2 into Developer ID, Key ID and Signing secret. The secret field is masked; the eye icon lets you reveal it to check.

  5. Leave Webhook secret empty for now (step 4).

  6. Click Save and test. XPRIO signs a quote request with your keys and sends it to DoorDash. If the card turns to Connected (test), you are done. If a red message appears, it carries the detail returned by DoorDash: most often an incomplete secret (it must be copied in full at creation time) or Sandbox keys pasted in Production mode.

Once connected, the card shows "Typical trip from your store (about 1.5 km)" with the real price returned by DoorDash, in dollars.

Step 4: enable real-time notifications (after approval)

Without this step, XPRIO refreshes the status of each trip every 20 seconds: it works. With it, DoorDash notifies XPRIO instantly on every change. The Webhooks section of the DoorDash portal is only accessible once your Drive integration is activated: while it reads "Pending activation", skip this step.

  1. In XPRIO, reopen the DoorDash Drive window (Edit on the card). Copy the Notification URL to declare with the provider.

  2. Still in this window, make up a long password (for example 20 characters without spaces) and paste it into Webhook secret. Click Save and test.

  3. In the DoorDash portal, left menu, click Drive ⌄ then Webhooks, and create a webhook: paste the URL, choose Bearer token authentication (or Basic, with the same password), and select all the delivery events offered.

  4. Save. The DoorDash Drive card in XPRIO will show "Real-time notifications active" from the first trip.

Step 5: choose the mode for each store

  1. In XPRIO, Stores menu, open the store (Edit), then the Delivery and Services tab.

  2. Check that the Delivery service is enabled.

  3. In the Who delivers your orders section, choose:

    • My drivers: nothing changes.

    • My drivers + partner courier as backup: your drivers stay first; a Call a partner courier button appears on every delivery order paid online as long as no driver is assigned. Option Automatically call a partner courier if no driver takes the order, with a delay of 5 to 30 minutes after "ready".

    • Partner courier only: every delivery order is automatically handed to the Dasher, at the moment you choose (When to request the courier: on acceptance, when preparation starts, or when the order is ready). The customer only sees online payment.

If the partner cards are greyed out with "Online payment required", first enable Stripe under App Configuration, Payment Methods.

  4. Choose DoorDash Drive under Provider. The list only offers connected providers covering the store's country.

  5. In "partner courier only" mode, choose the delivery fee charged to the customer: My fixed fees (your usual zones and rates) or The courier price (+ margin) (DoorDash quote for each address, plus a fixed or percentage margin). In backup mode the customer always pays your fixed fees.

  6. If needed, add pickup instructions for the courier and decide whether the customer's tip is passed on to the Dasher. Save.

In Live and on the customer side

On the order, the Partner courier block shows the Dasher's name from the assignment, masked phone number, stage (Courier on the way, Courier at the store, Picked up, At the customer, Delivered) and estimated arrival time. Before requesting, the confirmation window shows you the delivery cost and the planned times.

The order moves to Out for delivery when the Dasher picks it up and to Delivered on handover, without any action. You can cancel the Dasher as long as the order has not been picked up. If DoorDash cancels or the order is returned, you receive a notification, a sound and a message in Live, and you can request a new courier or assign one of your drivers.

In your app, the customer sees a Partner courier contact card with the Dasher's first name, a call button, a tracking link, and the live position on the map. On a store in "partner courier only" mode, the cart only shows card payment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I test before approval? Yes, with a Sandbox key connected in the Test environment: DoorDash simulates the trips, nothing is billed. The portal also offers a Delivery Simulator (Drive menu) to move a test trip forward step by step.

My request was refused, what now? DoorDash states the reason by email. Most often, an expected volume too low or an area not covered. You can request access again from the Add integrations page the following quarter.
