Overview

This article explains how to safely replace the battery in a Codebox lockbox so it continues generating access codes without interruption.

When to replace the battery

Replace the battery when:

  • The Codebox displays low-battery warnings

  • Access codes fail due to low power

  • You notice erratic screen behavior

Using fresh batteries prevents showing interruptions.

What you’ll need

  • (1) 9-volt alkaline battery

  • Small flathead screwdriver

  • Clean, dry work surface

  • Optional: gloves

Step-by-step battery replacement

If the display still works when you press any key:

  1. Enter the door code and open the key bin

  2. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the battery cover

  3. Replace the 9V battery behind the battery cover

  4. Fasten the screw back in place, securing the battery cover

If the lockbox has no power:

  1. Look on the bottom of the lockbox to find the battery port

  2. Touch the 9V battery to the battery port. Hold it in place until the lockbox has enough power for the screen to turn on

  3. Enter your door code to open the key compartment door

  4. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the battery cover

  5. Replace the 9V battery behind the cover

  6. Fasten the screw back in place, securing the battery cover

Tips for reliable battery performance

  • Use fresh alkaline 9-volt batteries only (do not use rechargeable 9-volt batteries).

  • Store spare batteries at room temperature.

  • Avoid mixing old and new batteries.

When to contact support

If the lockbox still won’t power on after battery replacement:

  • Confirm the battery is installed correctly

  • Try a new, unused 9-volt alkaline battery

  • Check for corrosion or debris in the battery compartment

If issues persist, contact Codebox Support at (888) 507-8885 with:

  • The lockbox serial number

  • A description of what happened

  • What you tried

Support can help identify whether the device has other hardware issues.

Safety reminder

Handle batteries carefully:

  • Avoid contact with metal objects

  • Do not attempt to recharge non-rechargeable batteries

  • Keep batteries away from children and pets
