Default Character Limits in Reviewr

When creating submission forms in Reviewr, all text field questions (including long-form text questions, short-form text questions, custom text questions, and default text questions) have a default character limit of 1500 characters unless edited. For reference, 1500 characters is approximately 185 words.

Character Count Display

By default, applicants do not see a character counter when typing into text fields. However, the Reviewr team can enable a character count display, which shows submitters how many characters they have used and how many remain. This feature is especially helpful for long-form text responses.

Error Messages for Submitters

If a submitter exceeds the character limit, they will see an error message at the top of the page when attempting to save or submit. This prevents them from moving forward until their response is within the allowed limit.

Best Practices for Admins

  • If you do not enable the character count display, include the character limit in the question text (e.g., “Limit: 1500 characters”).

  • For long-form responses, consider requesting that the Reviewr team enable the character count display for added clarity.

  • Keeping limits clear helps prevent confusion and keeps submitters on track.
