Using Generated Values for Evaluation Scores

The Generated Values feature calculates scores for evaluation forms, such as the Total Score or other custom score calculations. This tool is typically used when building a new evaluation form, but it can also be used when adding additional score calculations later.

Important Requirement

When using Generated Values, all evaluation form questions must use numerical values for their answer selections. The generator calculates scores by adding these numeric values together.

If you would like to display descriptive responses (such as “Excellent,” “Strong,” or “Needs Improvement”) instead of numbers, please contact the Reviewr team. We can configure the scoring so that descriptive responses still calculate correctly behind the scenes.

Editing the Total Generator

Once you have added all evaluation questions to your form:

  1. Navigate to the Generated Values page.

  2. Locate the Total generator.

  3. Hover over the generator and click the pencil icon to edit it.

  4. Select the questions you want included in the total score (typically all evaluation questions).

For each question included in the generator, you can configure:

  • Precision – Controls how many decimal places are displayed in the score.

  • Multiplier – Determines the weight of the question in the overall score.
For example, a multiplier of 2 will make that question count twice as much as other questions.

Creating a New Generator

You can also create additional generators to calculate custom scores based on specific groups of questions.

  1. Navigate to the Generated Values page.

  2. Click Add.

  3. Enter a name for the generator.

  4. Select the questions you want included in the calculation.

  5. Configure the precision and multiplier for each question as needed.

This can be useful for creating scores for specific categories, such as Academic Merit, Community Involvement, or other evaluation criteria.

Displaying the Total Score

After creating your questions and generators, the final step is to display the score at the bottom of the evaluation form so judges and admins can see the calculated results.

To display the score, add a Prompt Text HTML question to the bottom of your evaluation form.

  1. Add a Prompt Text HTML field.

  2. Enter the label you would like displayed, such as “Total” or “Total Score.”

  3. In the Insert Variable dropdown, select Total to display the score from your Total generator.

If you created additional generators, you can select the generator’s name from the Insert Variable dropdown to display those scores as well.

This will display the calculated score to judges and admins while completing the evaluation.

Testing Your Evaluation Form

After configuring your generators, test your evaluation form to ensure the scores calculate correctly.

  1. Create evaluation assignments in the system.

  2. Log in as the Test Judge.

  3. Complete an evaluation.

  4. Confirm that the generated scores (such as the Total) are calculating as expected.

Testing helps ensure that all questions, multipliers, and score calculations are working properly before launching your evaluation.
