Who can Rooster insure?

We work with a number of underwriters, and so our requirements are constantly changing, so it's always best to come on our Live Chat via the app or website to discuss with one of our customer service team. However, as a general rule the below are our basic requirements:


- Be at least 18 years old and under 75.
- Held a full driving licence for over a year. 🪪📆
- Have a mainland UK driving licence (currently not N Ireland licenses).
- Own a car that is less than 20 years old and not imported.
- Own a car worth less than £70,000 (although this can be vehicle specific).🚗

- Have no more than 2 fault claims in the last 2 years.

- Have not had a policy cancelled or voided by an insurer.

We also have restrictions on the vehicles we can insure based on your age and driving experience, along with of course, your test drive results.

To give you a bit of background information, each car is assigned to one of 50 car insurance groups under the Association of British Insurers' (ABI’s) rating system, and each group is assigned a rating based on the level of risk an insurer feels they carry.

So, for example, cars with a Group 1 insurance rating carry the lowest risk to an insurer; they might have a lot of safety features or are only capable of moderate speeds.

Whereas cars with a group 50 insurance rating pose a high level of risk, expensive super cars that are costly to repair could fall into this group.

  • ABI Group 1-17 - No Min Age (Some exceptions for under 20s if cc is over 1496 or vehicle is not a Hatchback)

  • ABI Group 18-24 – Min Age 21, for 21-24 and 1yr NCD required. No restrictions for age 25+

  • ABI Group 25-29 – Min Age 25, age 25-29 and 1yr NCD, 11mth ownership. Age 30+ needs 11mth licence only.

  • ABI Group 30-34 – Min Age 30, licence 23mths

  • ABI Group 35-39 – Min Age 30, licence 35mths

  • ABI Group 40-45 – Min Age 30, licence 59mths

  • ABI Group 46-50 – Min Age 30, licence 59mths, min 1 year NCD
