Change or remove my device for 2-factor authentication

How to remove your device for 2-factor authentication (2FA) so you can set it up on a new device to log into Sage HR.

Even though you can’t turn off the 2‑factor Authentication (2FA) requirement for your Sage account, you can remove the device you currently use.

You do this when:

  • You want to switch to Sage Verify instead of a third‑party authenticator app

  • You want to use Sage Verify or an authenticator app instead of text messages

  • You want to use text messages instead of phone calls

  • You’re setting up 2FA on a new phone

  • You need to use a different phone number

  • You’re resetting 2FA while fixing access issues

The steps to remove your device depend on whether you use an Employee Sage account or a Customer Sage account.

📌TIP: An admin user can confirm which Sage account you use by checking Personal Settings within your Sage HR profile.

You can also check your login screen.

If you see a “Changes to how you log in” banner, you use an Employee Sage account to sign in to Sage HR.

If you don’t see this banner, you use a Customer Sage account to sign in to Sage HR.

Select the relevant Sage account type below:

Employee Sage account

Your employer’s admin must reset 2FA from your Sage HR profile.

After the reset, Sage HR prompts you to set up 2FA the next time you sign in.

You can then choose a different device or a different 2FA method.

Steps for an admin

An admin can reset the employee’s 2FA from the personal settings in their Sage HR profile.

Customer Sage account

If you use a Customer Sage account, sign in to Sage Account Management, select Protect your account, and remove your device.

This lets you set up 2FA again on the same device or a new one.

The steps you follow depend on whether you still have access to the device you originally used for 2FA.

I do have access to my 2FA device

  1. Sign in to account.sso.sage.com with your Sage account email and password.

  2. Enter your verification code using your chosen method, such as an authenticator app.

  3. Select Protect your account.

  4. Select Remove.

  5. Enter your password and 2FA code again to confirm.

📌TIP: If you used a recovery key to sign in, use your new recovery key again.

Sage temporarily turns off 2FA for your previous device. Select Protect your account again to set up 2FA on the same device or a new one.

📌TIP: Set up a backup method. This helps you generate a new recovery key or reset 2FA if you lose access.

I don't have access to my 2FA device

  1. When Sage asks you to verify your identity, select Authenticate a different way.

The next steps depend on whether you have your recovery key or not.

I have the recovery key

  1. Enter your recovery key and note your new recovery key.

  2. In Sage Account Management, select Protect your account.

  3. Select Remove.

  4. Enter your password, then enter your new recovery key again.

Sage temporarily turns off 2FA for your previous device. Select Protect your account to set up 2FA again.

📌TIP: Set up a backup method. This helps you generate a new recovery key or reset 2FA if you lose access.

I've lost the recovery key/recovery key not working

If you don’t have your recovery key, use a backup method instead. You can use this to generate a new recovery key or reset 2FA on a new device.

📎NOTE: If you don’t have access to any backup method:

  • Employee user - Contact your employer. They can contact Sage support to reset 2FA for you

  • Admin user - Contact Sage support. They’ll reset 2FA after completing security checks with you or another admin
