Setting up an Automated Promo

Set up a discount that applies on its own once a cart hits a spend or quantity threshold, with no code to enter and nothing for staff to add.

An Automated Promo applies a discount on its own once a cart meets a condition you set. There is no code for the customer to enter and no product for staff to add manually. If the cart qualifies, the discount appears.

This is the type to use for offers like "spend $50 and save 10 percent", "buy any 6 bottles and get 15 percent off", or "buy 12 of the same item for a case price".

Automated Promo is the default type when you create a new promotion.

Before you start

Decide two things.

What triggers the discount. This is the condition the cart has to meet.

What the discount does. This is what happens once the condition is met.

Create the promotion

  1. Go to Products > Promotions.

  2. Click Create promotion in the top right.

  3. Enter a Name. The customer sees this at checkout, so keep it clear, for example "6 Bottle Wine Discount" rather than "wine promo v2".

  4. Leave Enabled on.

  5. Under Channels, choose where this runs. Select Store for register sales, Online for your website, or both.

  6. Open the Promo Type dropdown and choose Automated Promo.

Set the trigger

The trigger decides when the promotion fires. There are four options.

Volume. Total number of units in the cart. Use this for "buy any 6 bottles".

Amount. Cart subtotal. Use this for "spend $50".

Same item volume. Number of units of the same product. Use this for a case price on a single item, where 12 mixed bottles should not qualify.

Liquid volume. Total millilitres in the cart. This is useful when you want a threshold that treats a 1.75L bottle differently from a 750ml bottle.

Enter the number that has to be reached. The promotion applies once the cart is at or above it.

Set the action

The action decides what the discount does and where it lands.

Choose what the discount applies to:

  • Cart discounts the whole cart.

  • Products discounts only the products you list.

  • Shipping discounts delivery charges.

  • Taxes adjusts tax.

Then choose how the discount is calculated:

  • Percentage takes a percentage off.

  • Amount takes a fixed dollar amount off.

  • Case price sets a specific total price for the qualifying quantity.

  • Best pack price applies the best available pack price to the qualifying units.

  • Cost markup prices the item at your cost plus a margin you set.

Settings worth reviewing before you save

These change the result more than most people expect, and the defaults are not always what a store wants.

Count pack units toward quantity. Off by default. With it off, a 6 pack counts as one unit toward a volume trigger. Turn it on if you want it to count as six. Stores that sell both singles and packs almost always want this on.

Apply discount to each unit. Controls whether the discount is applied per qualifying unit or once to the group as a whole.

Discount whole multiples only. Applies to promotions triggered on quantity of the same item. With this on, a "buy 6 get 10% off" promotion applied to a cart of 9 bottles discounts 6 of them and leaves 3 at full price. With it off, all 9 are discounted once the threshold is met.

Exclude products that already have a promo price. Two separate settings. The first decides whether an already discounted product counts toward your trigger. The second decides whether it receives this discount.

Worth knowing: an excluded product still counts toward your volume and amount totals. It simply does not get the discount. So a 12 bottle promotion can legitimately count a sale item as one of the twelve and then decline to discount that bottle further.

Apply discount on promo price. Off by default, meaning the discount calculates from the regular price. Turn it on to calculate from the lower of the regular and promo price, which compounds the two. This only takes effect if the product's promo price is active on the channel where the sale happens. A promo price set for Online will not be used as the base for a register sale.

Two things that behave differently

Non discountable products never receive this discount, but they do still count toward your threshold. If one product in a qualifying cart refuses to discount, check that setting on the product page.

Products sold by weight do not count toward quantity thresholds at all. They do count toward spend thresholds, using their line total.

Add a schedule if you need one

Leave scheduling off and the promotion runs whenever it is enabled.

Turn on Schedule promotion to limit it by date range, by day of week, or by time of day. A Wednesday wine promotion, for example, needs the day of week set to Wednesday. The time window follows your store's local time.

Save and check it

  1. Click Create.

  2. Ring up a test sale that meets the trigger.

  3. Confirm the discount appears and the promotion name shows on the line item.

If nothing happens, check the promotion is enabled, the channel matches where you are ringing the sale, and the schedule covers right now.
