Setting up a BOGO promotion (Buy X Get Y Free)

Set up buy X get Y free, including why the free item must be rung up, how Santé picks which item is free, and why packs and singles count separately.

A BOGO promotion gives a customer free items when they buy a set quantity. Buy 1 get 1 free is the common version, but you can set any quantities, such as buy 3 get 1 free.

The products the customer has to buy and the products they get free are separate lists. They can be the same products or completely different ones, which lets you run offers like "buy any 2 six packs, get a bag of chips free".

Important: the free item has to be in the cart

BOGO does not add anything to the sale on its own. Every item, including the free one, has to be rung up or scanned. Santé then sets the qualifying items to zero.

If a customer qualifies for a free bottle and only one bottle is scanned, there is nothing for the promotion to discount.

How the free item is chosen

When more than one item qualifies for the free slot, Santé makes the cheapest qualifying item free. A customer buying a $40 bottle and a $12 bottle on a buy 1 get 1 receives the $12 bottle free.

The offer repeats. On a buy 1 get 1 promotion, a customer buying 4 qualifying items receives 2 of them free.

When the same product appears in both your Buy list and your Get list, Santé works in groups of (Buy quantity + Get quantity). A buy 2 get 1 promotion on a single product needs 3 of that product in the cart to produce 1 free, not 2. Within each group the cheapest items become the free ones and the most expensive are counted as the purchase.

Packs and singles are different items

Buy and Get lists match on the exact product and the exact pack. A 6 pack and a single of the same product are two different entries. If you want both to qualify, add both.

Create the promotion

  1. Go to Products > Promotions.

  2. Click Create promotion in the top right.

  3. Enter a Name. This shows to the customer at checkout, so "Buy 2 Get 1 Free Seltzer" reads better on a receipt than "BOGO 3".

  4. Leave Enabled on.

  5. Under Channels, choose Store, Online, or both.

  6. Open the Promo Type dropdown and choose BOGO (Buy X Get Y Free).

Set the quantities

The BOGO card has two number fields.

Buy quantity. How many qualifying items the customer must purchase. Defaults to 1.

Get quantity (free). How many items they receive free. Defaults to 1.

Both must be whole numbers of 1 or more. Entering 0 or a decimal will show a validation error and block saving.

Build the two product lists

Buy products. These are the products the customer must purchase to trigger the offer. Search by product name and click a result to add it. Add as many as you want.

Get products. These are the products the customer can receive free. Again, search and click to add.

The two lists are independent. Putting the same products in both creates a straightforward buy 2 get 1 on that range. Putting different products in each creates a cross sell offer.

Schedule it

Leave scheduling off and the promotion runs whenever it is enabled.

Turn on Schedule promotion to limit it to a date range, to certain days of the week, or to a daily time window. A weekend only BOGO needs the days of week set to Saturday and Sunday.

Save and check it

  1. Click Create.

  2. Ring up a test sale with enough qualifying items to trigger the offer, including the item you expect to be free.

  3. Confirm the correct number of items went to zero, and that the cheapest qualifying item is the one discounted.

  4. Add another full set of qualifying items and confirm the offer repeats.

If the free item is not applying

  • Confirm the free item was actually rung up. Nothing is added automatically.

  • Confirm the item is in the Get products list. Products in the Buy list do not become eligible to be free unless you also add them to Get.

  • Confirm the cart has reached the full Buy quantity, and that you have enough Get items too. The offer is limited by whichever side runs out first.

  • Confirm the pack matches. A single and a 6 pack are separate entries.

  • Check whether the product is marked non discountable, individually or at pack level.

  • Confirm the channel matches where the sale is being rung.

  • Products sold by weight are not eligible for BOGO.

  • Check whether Mix & Match already consumed the products into a bundle. Mix & Match runs before BOGO, so a bundled product is out of reach.
