Setting up a Tag Along promotion

Make one product free when a customer buys another. Covers the trigger and free product lists, how the quantities interact, and when to use BOGO instead.

A Tag Along promotion makes a specific product free when a customer buys a different product. Buy a case of a particular beer and get a branded glass free. Buy two bottles of a spirit and get a mixer free.

Important: the free item has to be in the cart

Tag Along does not add anything to the cart on its own. The free product has to be rung up or scanned like any other item, and Santé then prices it at zero.

Train your staff on this. If a customer qualifies for a free mixer and nobody adds the mixer to the sale, no discount appears and nothing looks broken. This is the most common reason a Tag Along promotion is reported as not working.

Tag Along or BOGO?

Use BOGO when the free item comes from a range and you want the cheapest qualifying item to be the free one, such as buy 2 get 1 free across a whole seltzer category.

Use Tag Along when a specific named product should come free with a specific purchase.

Create the promotion

  1. Go to Products > Promotions.

  2. Click Create promotion in the top right.

  3. Enter a Name. This shows to the customer at checkout.

  4. Confirm the Enabled toggle is on. It is on by default.

  5. Under Channels, choose Store, Online, or both.

  6. Open the Promo Type dropdown and choose Tag Along.

Add the trigger products

Trigger products are what the customer has to buy.

  1. Click into the Trigger Products search box.

  2. Type at least three characters of the product name.

  3. Wait a moment for results to appear.

  4. Click a product to add it.

Add as many trigger products as you want. Any one of them buying in sufficient quantity will fire the promotion.

Set Trigger quantity to the number the customer must buy. It defaults to 1.

Add the tag along products

Tag along products are what the customer receives free.

  1. Click into the Tag Along Products (Free) search box.

  2. Type at least three characters of the product name.

  3. Click a product to add it.

Set Tag along quantity to how many of the free product the customer receives. It defaults to 1.

How the quantities work together

Trigger quantity is counted across all your trigger products combined, not per product. If you list three different beers as triggers and set Trigger quantity to 2, a customer buying one of each has bought three trigger items and qualifies.

The offer repeats. With a trigger quantity of 2 and a tag along quantity of 1, a customer buying 6 trigger items can receive 3 free items.

The customer only receives as many free items as they actually have in the cart. If they qualify for 3 free mixers but only one mixer is rung up, one mixer is free.

Stock matters here

The free product still comes out of your inventory. Check stock on the free item before launching a promotion built around it, and keep an eye on it while the promotion runs.

Schedule it

Leave scheduling off to run the promotion whenever it is enabled.

Turn on Schedule promotion to set a date range, restrict it to certain days, or limit it to a time window during the day.

Save and check it

  1. Click Create.

  2. Ring up the trigger product at the trigger quantity.

  3. Ring up the tag along product as well. It will not appear by itself.

  4. Confirm its price drops to zero and the promotion name appears on the line item.

If the free product is not going to zero

  • Confirm the free product was actually added to the sale. This is the most common cause by a wide margin.

  • Confirm the customer has reached the full Trigger quantity across all trigger products.

  • Confirm the exact product and pack in the cart matches what you listed. A 6 pack and a single of the same product are treated as different items, so listing one does not cover the other.

  • Confirm the free product is not marked non discountable.

  • Confirm the channel matches where the sale is being rung.

  • Check whether Mix & Match already pulled the product into a bundle. Bundled products cannot receive other promotions.
