Learn how to create and manage custom product categories in SauceyDirect to better organize your storefront and highlight key items.
In this article you will learn the following:
How to create new custom static or dynamic categories (e.g. “Top Sellers,” “Staff Picks,” “New Arrivals”)
How to rename, reorder, show/hide, or delete categories
How to move products into one or multiple categories
How to feature items within a category
Creating a Custom Category
The Catalog Menu now includes Products and Categories. (This was previously just Products).
Click Categories and click the purple button Create New Category
From the popup, enter the new category name, select a category type, and click on Create. In the example below, we're creating a static category named “Staff Picks”.
Static categories allow for manual addition or removal of items while dynamic categories allow you to set filters to pull in certain products whether it’s by category, brand, a certain price range, or only discounted items.
If we were to create it as a dynamic category, the following window would look like this:
While it looks like a lot of information at first, you'll mostly be working in the boxed area on the left to set the filters you'd like to use to automatically pull items into the category. Filters can be set by price, category, brand, or to pull in discounted items only.
The new custom category will show at the top of the existing categories.
Category Actions
Each category has a set of actions that could be taken.
: Edit Category Name
: Show/Hide Category
: Delete Category
You cannot delete categories with products assigned to it. You must reassign the products to another category before doing so.
Changing Category Order
The order of the categories on this page will also reflect the order in which they’re shown on your store’s menu. If you’d like to change the order of any category, click and hold the hamburger icon
to drag and drop them into the desired order on this page.
Changes will take place immediately and be reflected on your online storefront.
Adding Products to a Category
Products can be added to one or more categories including custom categories.
To add products to a category (or to change the category of a product), navigate to the products page and select the products you want included in the category, then click Bulk Edit and select Assign Categories
In the popup, click on the category you would like to assign the products to, and hit Save at the bottom right of the list.
If desired, you may assign the same product(s) to multiple categories by selecting more than one category.
Additionally, if the products selected are part of multiple categories it will show a
in the checkbox, indicating that 1 or more products fall into these categories. Click Save.
Now the products should show the new category it's been assigned to, which would also reflect in your storefront.
Featuring Products in a Category
After adding products to a category, you can highlight specific items to appear in a set order in the category preview.
Expand the category to show a search bar, which you can click to show the products, or type to search for a particular product. Then click the heart icon
to feature it.
As you see below, Angry Orchard now appears in front of the rest.
To remove a product from being featured, simply expand a category and click the broken heart icon
.
