Virtual Event Listings

Where will the content come from?

Users. Users are submitting virtual events

CitySpark. We are actively aggregating and denoting both local and national virtual event content as we become aware of it

  • Local virtual events will always show up for you (subject to the same filters as other events—approval, blocks, categories, etc.)

  • Where relevant, some events will be denoted (by us) as national virtual events.

  • These will appear regardless of your location on any widgets or portals set to display virtual events

  • Times for national events will display in your local time on your calendars

Publisher. You or your staff may be compiling virtual events—if so, we encourage you to use the platform to submit and manage these listings. A few tips to keep in mind:

  • Consider adding ā€œVirtual,ā€ ā€œOnline,ā€ or ā€œLive Streamā€ to the title

  • Note that a physical location day and time are still required

  • Enter the location where the event originates from (city is sufficient)

  • Provide the start time as it would be in the origination location (e.g., if it originates in Boston at 5pm ET, and you are in California, you would still enter the start time as 5pm)

  • These events may be free or paid, and we are seeing many that are free, with donations encouraged

  • Check the ā€œVirtual Eventā€ checkbox as noted below

Submission Selection

How will these events be identified?

A ā€œVirtual Eventā€ check box has been added to the event submission form—it is currently just below the description box. This should be checked for any event that is virtual, online, streaming, or otherwise allows for remote attendance.

Displaying Virtual Events

How do I display these events to my audience?

Widgets

  • Add the label ā€œcsVirtualā€ to any widgets (the widget will then only display virtual events)

  • Set a large widget radius—a max of 200 miles is allowed, and recommended

Portals

  • Place a button or menu link to your virtual events in your existing portal by using a unique URL

  • A URL can be structured to link to your calendar only showing virtual events. This is typically done by appending "show/?virtual=true", but can also be done using ā€œ/show/?search=labels:csVirtualā€ to the URL of your calendar page (i.e., yourdomain.com/calendar/#!/show/?virtual=true).

  • You can specify a local radius unique to virtual events appending the syntax "&distance=100"

  • More about URL structuring can be found in the admin help section under ā€œcustom URLā€

  • If you want the Virtual Event widget to click through to display only virtual events on your portal, use the ā€œPersist Settings to Portalā€ on the widget settings
