LG webOS Signage Hardware and Player

Supported LG webOS Signage displays for ScreenCloud Arc, minimum requirements, how to install and set up the webOS player, and known limitations.

ScreenCloud's LG webOS Signage player runs natively on LG commercial signage displays, so no separate media player is needed. This article covers which displays are supported, how to install and configure the player, and the limitations to be aware of before you commit to webOS hardware.

The supported version is webOS Signage 6.0. Consumer LG TVs running webOS TV are not supported.

webOS Signage 6.0 runs an older browser build than any other supported platform, which places real constraints on what it can display. Read webOS Signage player limitations below before buying.

webOS Signage Hardware

Minimum requirements

  • webOS Signage 6.0

  • 8 GB of storage or higher, 16 GB preferred

  • A stable internet connection, with Ethernet preferred over WiFi

Not supported

  • Consumer LG TVs running webOS TV. These lack the commercial signage OS the player requires. To use a consumer TV, connect a supported media player to it instead.

  • webOS Signage 4.1. This OS version has reached end of support and receives no further updates or fixes. webOS 4.1 displays ship with Chromium 53, which no longer receives security updates, so they are limited to media playback only: images, documents and video. Apps, links and feeds will not render. If you have webOS 4.1 displays, connect a supported media player rather than replacing the screen.

webOS Signage Player Setup

Upgrading your display firmware

Keep the display on current firmware for best results. LG handles firmware upgrades directly, so contact LG through their Global Service Network and a support representative will guide you through the process.

Preparing a USB flash drive

Installing by USB requires a drive formatted specifically for LG displays: FAT32 format with the partition scheme set to MBR (Master Boot Record). Use a completely empty drive to avoid file conflicts.

On macOS you can do this with Disk Utility. On Windows the native tools cannot set an MBR partition scheme, so you will need third-party formatting software.

Formatting on Windows

  1. Insert the USB drive into a USB port.

  2. Open File Explorer and select This PC from the left pane.

  3. Under Devices and drives, right-click the drive and select Format.

  4. Set File system to FAT32 (Default).

  5. Leave Allocation unit size at the default.

  6. Enter a name in the Volume label field.

  7. Select Start, then confirm.

Formatting on macOS

  1. Open Disk Utility and choose View, then Show All Devices.

  2. Select the drive in the sidebar.

  3. Select Erase in the toolbar.

  4. In the Scheme menu, choose Master Boot Record.

  5. In the Format menu, choose MS-DOS (FAT) for drives of 32 GB or less, or ExFAT for drives over 32 GB.

  6. Enter a volume name of 11 characters or fewer.

  7. Select Erase, then Done.

Adding the player to the drive

  1. On the USB drive, create a folder named application, all in lowercase. The lowercase name is required for the display to find the app.

  2. Move the downloaded file into the application folder.

  3. Rename the file to com.lg.app.signage.ipk. The display will not recognize it under any other name. Check that the name does not carry a duplicate extension such as "(1)" from a repeated download, which causes installation errors.

  4. Eject the drive properly, then insert it into the back of the LG display. The display should recognise it immediately.

Installing the player from USB

  1. Turn on the display and press the Home menu button.

  2. Confirm the USB notification appears in the top right corner.

  3. Select the Settings button in the top right corner and press OK on the remote.

  4. Select SI Server Setting and press OK.

  5. Set Application Launch Mode to Local.

  6. Set Application Type to IPK.

  7. Set Local Application Upgrade to USB, then select Confirm to save and begin the download.

  8. When the download finishes, select OK.

  9. Power the display off and on again to complete the upgrade. The player opens automatically and shows a pairing code.

Installing the player from a URL

Make sure the display is connected to the internet first.

  1. Press Setup on the remote, or select the Settings button and press OK.

  2. Select EZ Settings.

  3. Select SI Server Settings.

  4. Turn on Fully Qualified Domain Name.

  5. Set Application Launch Mode to Local.

  6. Set Application Type to IPK.

  7. Set Local Application Upgrade to Remote.

  8. Select Confirm, then OK.

  9. Turn the display off and on again.

The player will now appear in the display's home menu as webOS-client.

Updating the player

  1. Press Setup on the remote, or select Settings and press OK.

  2. Go to EZ Settings, then SI Server Settings.

  3. The Fully Qualified Domain Name field will show the URL currently in use. The existing version number will vary, which is expected.

  4. Confirm Application Launch Mode is Local and Application Type is IPK.

  5. Set Local Application Upgrade to Remote.

  6. Select Confirm, then OK.

  7. Turn the display off and on again. The player restarts automatically within a few moments.

  8. Press S.MENU on the remote to open the side menu and confirm the version number reads 2.2.2.

webOS Signage Player Management

Launching and exiting the player

The player appears green in the home menu under the name webOS-client. Navigate to it with the remote and press OK to open it.

To close the player, press EXIT or HOME on the remote.

Player settings sidebar

With the player running, press S.MENU on the remote to open the side menu. It contains:

  • Rotation. Rotates the screen.

  • Clear cache. Clears stored data to resolve playback problems.

  • Restart. Restarts the player app.

  • Reload. Refreshes the player.

  • Reset pairing. Generates a new pairing code.

  • Reboot system. Restarts the device.

  • Daily restart. Sets a time for the device to restart each day. Recommended, set to off-hours.

The menu also shows device details including the build version, the webOS version and the IP address.

There is no Start at Boot toggle on webOS. The behavior is built into the player and is always on as long as the app is installed.

webOS Signage player limitations

The webOS Signage player does not perform to the same level as ScreenCloud's own hardware. The limitations below are inherent to the platform rather than bugs.

Chromium version limits which apps can run

The player uses Chromium to render apps, links and other web-based content. Each webOS version is locked to a Chromium build that LG no longer advances, so the display cannot run anything that requires a newer build.

OS version

Chromium build

webOS Signage 4.1

Chromium 53

webOS Signage 6.0

Chromium 79

Chromium 79 is the oldest browser build of any currently supported platform, so webOS Signage 6.0 is the most constrained option available. In practice:

  • Power BI will not run. It requires Chromium 94 or higher.

  • Canva will not run. It requires Chromium 86 or higher.

  • The Embed app and links vary. Whether they render depends on what the linked page itself requires.

When content cannot render, it appears blank, black, white or grey on screen. Some show an error instead, such as Canva's "Please update your browser" message. The preview in your account will look normal, which is why on-screen behavior is the thing to check.

If your content depends heavily on apps rather than uploaded media, a supported media player connected to the display will give you the full feature set.

Video playback

  • Black flash between clips. When content switches from a video to anything else, a black flash occurs. It does not happen switching from non-video content into a video.

  • One video at a time. Running more than one video simultaneously is likely to crash the player. If you are using a layout with a secondary zone, keep video to a single zone.

  • Green line glitch above firmware 03.22.20. Some webOS Signage firmware versions later than 03.22.20 introduce a green line artefact during video playback. If you hit this, contact LG Support about downgrading to 03.22.20.

Uninstalling the player

  1. Press the Home button on the remote.

  2. Press the up arrow to reach the X above the ScreenCloud app.

  3. Press the X button when the frowning icon appears.

  4. Select Okay to confirm removal.

Remember to remove the screen from your ScreenCloud account afterwards so the license is freed up.

Troubleshooting ScreenCloud on LG webOS Signage

Work through these before contacting support.

Step

Task

How to do it

1

Clear the cache

Press S.MENU to open the side menu, then select Clear Cache. The app restarts automatically.

2

Power cycle the display

Turn it off for a few minutes, then back on.

3

Update the OS

Check for webOS updates and apply the latest version available to the display.

4

Check the power adapter

A failing adapter causes intermittent instability.

5

Check the internet connection

Confirm the display has a strong, stable connection.

6

Remove unnecessary apps

So the display runs only the ScreenCloud player.

7

Reinstall the player

Delete and reinstall the app, then re-pair.

8

Factory reset

Press Settings, go to Admin Menu, toggle Admin Mode ON (default password 000000 if unchanged), select Factory Reset and confirm. Reinstall the player afterwards.

If the problem persists after all of the above, the display may be faulty. Contact LG, or connect a supported media player to the display instead.

FAQ

Does the webOS Signage player have a Start at Boot option?

Not as a toggle. It is always enabled automatically while the player app is installed.

The display will not recognise the app file on my USB drive. What is wrong?

The file almost certainly needs renaming. It must be called com.lg.app.signage.ipk exactly, sit inside a lowercase application folder, and carry no duplicate extension such as "(1)" from a repeated download.

I have a consumer LG TV. Can I still use it?

Yes, but not with the webOS Signage player. Connect a supported media player to the TV instead. See Hardware for ScreenCloud for options.

Why does content look fine in preview but not on screen?

The preview renders in your browser, not on the display, so it is not subject to the device's Chromium limits. On-screen output is the accurate check.
