Apple iPads are inexpensive and widely available, but the ScreenCloud iOS player has real limitations that make it a weaker long-term choice than dedicated signage hardware. This article is upfront about those limitations, then covers the hardware, setup, and management you need if you're using iPadOS anyway.
The ScreenCloud iOS player cannot start at boot, and content will not keep playing if the device loses its internet connection. If you're buying new hardware, Android or Fire OS options are generally the better choice. If you already own iPads, they're a perfectly reasonable starting point.

These are discontinued but still run supported versions of iPadOS. This includes every iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Mini generation from 2018 onward, along with the standard iPad 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th generations.
iPadOS Player Setup
Preparing your iPad
If setting up a new device, follow the on-screen setup: language, WiFi, and Apple ID sign-in. If this iPad is solely for signage, skip setting a passcode and select Don't Transfer Apps & Data when prompted.
A passcode is required later if you want to lock the player's settings panel. If you skip it now, you can add one afterwards in the Settings app.
Installing the player
Open the App Store and search for ScreenCloud Player.
Select Get to install the app.
Connect the device to WiFi before opening the player. A mobile data connection or hotspot can cause connection issues.
Pairing the screen
Open the player and note the pairing code, or scan its QR code from another device. Log in to your ScreenCloud account, add a new screen, enter the code and give the screen a name. You can then assign content to it.
iPadOS Player Management
Opening the settings panel
Press and hold anywhere on the screen for about two seconds while the player is running. A panel slides in from the right with options including screen name, orientation, Reload, and Clear Cache under Advanced Settings.
Guided Access
Guided Access is Apple's own kiosk-style lockdown, and is the single most important setting for an unattended iPad. Without it, anyone can swipe away from the player to the home screen or another app.
Go to Settings, then Accessibility, and enable Guided Access.
Set a passcode for it.
Turn on the Accessibility Shortcut so Guided Access controls are easy to reach.
Open the ScreenCloud Player, then triple-click the side or Home button, and select Start.
To end a session, double-click the side button (Face ID devices) or the Home button (Touch ID devices), or triple-click and enter the passcode, then select End.
On very old iOS versions the screen could dim after 20 minutes during Guided Access. This was fixed by Apple, and keeping the device's OS current avoids it entirely, so it's unlikely to affect any currently supported iPad.
Locking the player's settings panel
Guided Access stops someone leaving the app, but it doesn't stop them opening the player's own settings panel. Lock that separately:
Open the settings panel and, under System, enable Lock Settings Panel.
This uses the device's Touch ID, Face ID, or passcode to restrict access.
If you see Unable to lock settings panel, Touch ID / Passcode is not configured, go to Settings, then Passcode, and turn a passcode on first.
Resetting the pairing code
Press and hold the screen for two seconds to open the settings panel, then select Reset Pairing. A new pairing code appears, ready to re-pair.
Mirroring to a display with AirPlay
The player can continue displaying if mirrored to an AirPlay-compatible screen. The screen will show at the iPad or iPhone's own aspect ratio rather than filling a wider display, so this suits occasional use rather than a permanent signage setup.
Troubleshooting ScreenCloud on iPadOS
Work through these before contacting support.

FAQ
Why doesn't my content keep playing when the WiFi drops?
The iOS player cannot cache content for offline playback the way some other platforms do. A stable, dedicated internet connection is essential for reliable iPad signage.
Does the player start automatically if the iPad restarts or loses power?
No. The iOS player has no Start at Boot feature, so someone needs to reopen it manually after any restart. This is the main reason iPads aren't recommended for unattended, always-on signage.
How do I stop people opening the player's settings from the screen?
Turn on Guided Access to stop them leaving the app, and separately enable Lock Settings Panel inside the player itself to stop them opening its settings sidebar. Both are needed for a fully locked-down display.
Can I use an iPad as a wireless display for another device?
