Write Groove — Student Timeline & Skills

Use Write Groove to see everything a student has been working on, in one place. You’ll get a timeline of activities and a snapshot of the skills they’re strongest in—and the skills to focus on next.

What you can do here

  • View a student’s writing and learning timeline.

  • Filter by activity type, status, and date range.

  • See scores on activities that are graded.

  • Open any activity directly from the timeline.

  • Review Top Skills and To Improve at a glance.

Pick a student

At the top of the screen, click the student selector and choose the learner you want to review. The right-hand panel updates to show that student’s skills.

Show or hide activity types

To the left of the student’s name are four icons that control what appears on the timeline:

  1. All — shows everything.

  2. Writing tasks — assignments set in Scribo that require student writing.

  3. Other activities — things like Presto Learning micro-learning tasks.

  4. Personal checks — the student’s own writing checks that were not assigned by a teacher.

Toggle these to focus the timeline.

Tip: If you’re not seeing what you expect, click All to reset.

Filter by status

To the right of the student’s name, use the Status drop-down to show only activities that are:

  • Not started

  • In progress

  • Handed in

Use case: Great for quickly finding work that’s still in progress or due for review.

Filter by date range

Use the From and To date fields to narrow the timeline to a specific window (e.g., a term or reporting period).

Tip: Clear the dates to return to the full view.

Read the timeline cards

Each card represents an activity. You’ll typically see:

  • Title and assigned date

  • Status (matches your status filter)

  • Score (only for activities that are scored)

  • A folder icon — click this to open the activity in a new view for full details, submissions, and feedback.

Skills panel (right side)

Two tabs summarise the student’s skill trends:

  • Top Skills — strengths based on recent work.

  • To Improve — skills to focus on next.

Badges may indicate movement (e.g., improvement since the student last wrote). Use these to guide feedback, goal-setting, and next tasks.

Common workflows

  • Spot what needs attention: Filter to In progress + last two weeks to see what to chase or support.

  • Parent conversation ready: Keep All + recent dates to discuss wins (Top Skills) and next steps (To Improve).

  • Marking queue: Filter to Handed in today/this week and open cards via the folder icon.

Troubleshooting & tips

  • I can’t see an activity: Check the activity type toggles, status filter, and dates. Click All and clear dates to reset.

  • No scores showing: Some activities aren’t scored; only scored items display a mark on the card.

  • I opened the wrong student: Use the student selector at the top to switch quickly.

Glossary

  • Other activities: Learning tasks from integrated tools such as Presto Learning.
