Creating a Writing Activity (Basic Options)

Teachers know very well that students need just the right amount of guidance in writing. We want to give the students enough information to get started, but not too much that it restricts their own creativity. This makes structuring our writing activities a key factor in our students’ success.

In this video, let’s look at how we can create a writing activity which uses the most often used settings, where the student Writing Check and Scribo Score are enabed.

From the Scribo homepage go to the right side and hover over Activity where you will see a couple of options.

To create a new activity, you can Assign from Library if you want to use an activity you’ve already created before, Create and assign from scratch if you want to create an activity yourself, or Create and assign using Scribot AI if you want our AI’s help in creating the activity.

For now, let’s choose Create and assign from scratch so we can learn about all the available options and settings.

  • Here you will set all the basic information and instructions for your writing activity. First we have to set the title.

  • Then, you can type out your writing prompt and instructions in the box below or, you can actually use AI to generate the instructions and writing prompt based on the title of your activity.

  • Click on the AI icon and check if the topic, subject, and year level are all correct. You will also have to indicate the writing style for this task. We can then click on Go! and the AI will generate three writing prompts.

    • You can select which prompt you think suits your activity the best and you can edit them if you would like to add or change some details.

  • The AI has also created a set of keywords for the activity. These are words the AI will look for when checking your students’ work to make sure they are not off topic. You can also add or change these keywords as much as you want.

  • You’ll also have to set a word count for this activity as well as the suggested number of paragraphs. After that, the basic information for your writing activity is complete.

There are loads more options for you to tweak and fine tune further as you can see on the left side of the page. We’ll be talking about those in another video. But for now, let’s go down to Assign to set the assignment settings for this activity.

  • First you can set who among your classes will participate in the activity. You can choose just one or two classes, or you can even select all your classes if you wish.

  • You can also go down and select specific students who will be accomplishing this activity. You can do this if let’s say, some of your students will be exempted from this task.

  • From here you can set the start date and time for the activity as well as the due date and time.

  • Lastly, you have the option to enable Enforce due date. When enabled, students’ work will automatically be handed in or submitted once the due date and time has passed, even if some students have not yet completed their work. You can also leave this off if you want to allow your students to continue writing and hand in their work even past the due date.

Once all that is done, you can go ahead and click Assign. There you go! Your activity is ready and your students can begin writing.
