Enabling Claro and Using Claro Student Chat

Many students really struggle with writer’s block. When the ideas just aren’t flowing, some students may even get deterred from writing altogether. But Scribo’s here to help!

Introducing Claro, your students’ AI Writing Assistant. Claro is the friend your students need any time they hit a speed bump while writing. But Claro doesn’t just help the students, Claro helps teachers as well.

Enabling Claro in a Writing Activity

First, we have to make sure Claro is enabled for your students. On the Scribo homepage, go to a writing activity, click the three dots icon and select Edit Activity to open up the activity settings. You can also do this when first creating a new writing activity.

From here, head on over to the Researching Tab. To let your students chat with Claro, simply turn on the Enable Claro setting.

By default, all the students participating in this activity will be given access to Claro. However, you as the teacher have the flexibility to decide who among your students get access and who among them do not. This is helpful if you think some students will benefit more from working independently.

You can also set the level of support Claro will offer your students.

  • Easy instructs Claro to simplify its feedback and responses, making them easily understandable. This is useful for younger learners.

  • Medium allows Claro to dive a little deeper in conversations, but still maintain a more casual tone. This is helpful for learners who are a little more experienced and proficient.

  • Advanced lets Claro go all in when explaining concepts and may even use academic language in conversations. This is great for more advanced students in the later year levels.

You can set this for the entire class, or individually if you think they need varying levels of support.

Once you’re satisfied with the settings, you can click Save and continue to keep editing the activity or Save and exit if you’re done. Your students will now be able to chat with Claro while writing their work.

Checking Claro Chat History

But again, Claro is not just for the students. Claro is there to assist teachers as well.

When you open a writing activity where Claro is enabled, you’ll now see an icon in the feedback section labeled Claro’s History.

  • From here, you have access to the student’s full chat history with Claro by clicking on Open Full Student Chat.

  • Not only does Claro save the entire chat history, it also categorizes the different questions the student asked based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. This gives you valuable insight as to what kind of questions your student is asking and more importantly, where they might need more help.

  • When checking out a question in a category, you can click on it and you will be taken to the exact part of the conversation with where this question was asked. Now you can do a little more digging as to how this student ended up asking that question.

Using Claro as a Teacher

Lastly, you can actually use Claro yourself as if you were one of your students. Simply click on the chat icon on the bottom right and you should also see an option labelled Chat with Claro. Here you can talk to Claro as if you were the student writing this essay.

This is really helpful in getting a student perspective with Claro, or even just using Claro to help you give quality feedback.

There you go! Claro is an amazing tool that keeps students moving and motivated while writing, and gives teachers unique insights into their students’ writing process
