Writing Checks and Feedback

Giving your students instant quality feedback is what Scribo Writing is all about.

In this video, let’s learn how to use Writing Checks and give Feedback

On the Scribo Writing homepage click on the activity where you want to give feedback. You will then see your students’ work.

You can give feedback using the writing support panel.

By default, Scribo gives your student a Scribo Score. This is Scribo’s rating of your student’s performance across five dimensions of writing.

However, if you included a rubric in the activity settings, you can click on Open Rubric Grading to check the grading criteria.

  • To grade your student using the rubric, click Grade using AI. Scribo will then generate feedback for each rubric criterion.

  • If you would like to revise the generated feedback, you can click Edit and make any necessary changes. When you’re done revising, make sure to click Save Feedback.

  • You can also modify the score given per criterion by clicking on it and choosing your desired score. Remember that changing the score in one criterion will affect your student’s overall score or grade.

To learn more about creating, using, and sharing rubrics, check out our other videos and guides all about rubrics.

On the writing support panel you will see five different AI writing checks.

  • Improve Grammar & Spelling will highlight all errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

    • If you like, you can filter the errors based on specific categories to help you navigate through your student’s work.

    • Hovering your cursor over any of the highlighted errors will give an explanation of your student’s mistake and how to correct it. You can even click on the highlighted word to get more details and suggestions.

      • However, take note that the amount of detail Scribo gives in any writing check will change depending on the student experience you chose when setting up the activity.

      • Check out our other How-to video on setting the student experience to learn more.

  • Improve Vocabulary gives information on your student’s word usage and diction. This will help you understand if your student is writing at the desired proficiency level.

    • The graph shows the level of the words used. You can click on each bar to show which words belong to each level

    • You will also see your student’s overall vocabulary level based on all the words in their work.

    • Scribo also points out words repeated often. You can filter which repeated words you’d like to see, then click on any of the identified words to get synonyms and suggestions.

  • Improve Topic Coverage shows if your student stayed on topic by checking if the necessary keywords or synonyms were used.

    • These are based on the keywords you indicated when first setting up the activity.

    • You can see how many keywords were used and how many were missed.

      • Clicking on any of the missing keywords gives other suggestions and synonyms.

    • You can also check which paragraphs do not include any key words at all.

  • Improve Cohesives checks how well your student made use of transitional devices.

    • All the cohesives used will be highlighted and Scribo will determine if they are used correctly.

    • Once again, you can click on any of the highlighted words to get suggestions and synonyms.

  • Improve Sentences highlights any sentence errors made in the essay.

    • Scribo again explains the error and gives suggestions on how to improve.

    • You can also filter the sentences based on their sentence type.

Lastly, aside from AI writing checks, you can also add your own comments using Teacher Feedback.

  • You can highlight any part of your student’s work, right click it, then type out your own comments and feedback. Comments can be viewed by hovering over the highlighted portion, or by going into Teacher Feedback

  • In here you can also view the Rubric Feedback generated previously.

  • Also , if you chose to include Writing Goals in the activity settings, you can also generate writing goal feedback by clicking here. Once again if you would like to revise this feedback, simply click on it and you can make the necessary changes.

All the feedback found here will also appear in the Teacher Report. Check out our How-to video on teacher reports to learn more.

There you go! With Scribo you can give instant feedback on your students’ work any time, even while they’re writing.
