When students have been writing for quite some time, they tend to develop a blind spot for the common errors they commit. Which is why it’s helpful for them to see these same mistakes but in another piece of writing.
In this video and guide, let’s check out how you can help your students identify writing errors using Flip-the-Pen on Scribo Writing.
On the Scribo Writing homepage go to the menu on the right, hover over Activity, then select Assign a Flip-the-Pen Activity.
Flip-the-Pen is a unique Scribo Writing activity that allows students to correct errors in an AI generated essay instead of writing an essay themselves. This gives students a different perspective on the writing mistakes they themselves commit and allows teachers to assess if students are able to identify writing errors.
On this page you will first set up the parameters of the essay your students will fix.
Start by typing out the Topic of the essay.
You can then type out instructions for the essay or, to make things easier, you can use Scribo’s AI to automatically generate instructions based on your topic.
From here indicate:
the Subject,
your students’ Grade Level,
the essay’s Writing Style, Word Count, and Paragraph Count.
Also make sure you’ve chosen the correct Class where this activity will be assigned.
Lastly, you have the option of giving all students the same essay to correct, or giving each student a different essay.
Giving all students the same essay might make it easier to discuss the activity in class later on,
while giving each student a different essay could help prevent them from sharing answers with one another.
Once you’re satisfied with these settings, click Next. The next page is where you actually get to select the writing errors and challenges your students will encounter in the essay.
You have the option of selecting the English proficiency level of the essay,
as well as a variety of common writing errors found across the five dimensions of writing.
Take your time to go through this comprehensive list of errors to determine which suits your students’ needs best. You can select as many or as few as you want.
Once you’ve made your selections, click Next and you will see a confirmation that your activity is ready to be created. To proceed, simply click Go. Scribo will then take a few moments to create the activity and generate the essays.
Once it’s done you can click here to view your activity. You will then see all the AI generated essays for each student which include the writing errors and challenges you selected. You can now instruct your students to begin correcting their essays. The more mistakes a student is able to fix, the higher their Scribo score will be.
There you go! Flip-the-Pen gives students a different perspective on the writing skills they’re trying to learn. By seeing these errors in another essay, they become more wary of making the same mistakes in their own work.
